Miracle fall short of playoffs
The Fort Myers Miracle won 16 of their final 21 games in the Florida State League, but came up short of catching the first-place Bradenton Marauders and making the postseason. They were eliminated, officially, with Saturday’s 8-2 loss to the St. Lucie Mets.
The season did end on a high note Sunday when the Miracle (36-32 second half, 64-74 overall) handed the Mets a 12-2 defeat in the season finale.
Bradenton and the Charlotte Stone Crabs start a best-of-three South Division playoff series Tuesday while the Tampa Yankees and Dunedin Blue Jays do the same for the North Division title. The division winners collide in a best-of-five series to determine the 2010 FSL Champion.
The Miracle scored seven runs in a wild fourth inning and added five more in the eighth to cruise to the final season victory Sunday.
Mets starter Brad Holt cruised through the first three innings before losing his control in the fourth. He issued four consecutive walks, hit a batter and gave up a double to Nate Hanson. He also made four wild pitches as the Miracle opened a 4-0 lead.
Miracle starter Alex Wimmers (2-0) struck out nine in five innings for the win. In his short Miracle career, he extended his hitless innings streak to 10 2/3 before giving up an RBI single in the fourth. He gave up just one earned run in 15 2/3 innings.
