Seahawks jump river to test Wave
Cape Coral High football coach Brad Metheny is trying to keep his players focused and low key as the Seahawks face their second straight rivalry game of the season.
After knocking off crosstown rival Mariner 56-14 on their home turf, the Seahawks head across the river Friday night to the home of the Fort Myers Green Wave, who consider themselves lucky to come away with a 14-13 win at Cypress Lake in the season opener.
“It’s nice to have that first win under our belts,” said Metheny. “Even more so for our kids, to keep them moving in a positive direction. We just want to continue to get better weekly.”
It’s just one of several interesting matchups on the schedule that includes Ida Baker (0-1) at North Fort Myers (0-1); Island Coast (1-0) at Cypress Lake (0-1); North Port (0-1) at Mariner (0-1); Bishop Verot (1-0) at Lemon Bay (1-0) and Lehigh (1-0) at Dunbar (0-1).
The Seahawks beat the Wave 26-13 last season on their way to an undefeated regular season and third straight playoff appearance (11-1).
“We’re not worried about last year,” said Metheny, who was not part of last season. “Last year is in the past. Of course, we’d like to duplicate that, but we have to take it one game at a time and continue to stay focused on our goal of winning the district championship.”
The Wave, on the other hand, experienced a rare losing season (3-7) and will be looking for a measure of revenge for last year’s loss to the Seahawks.
“I expect a tough game,” said Metheny. “They throw the ball around a bit. They have a wide receiver, a tailback and a fullback that are all good players, so it will be a competitive game.”
So too will the Baker-North matchup, which was won by the Bulldogs last season. Though Baker is coming off an opening loss to Lehigh, North is looking to score its first points of the season.
Mariner, 1-9 last season, is looking to stop a string of three straight losses when North Port, which was battered by Charlotte 48-0 last week, pays a visit to Tony McKenna Field.
