Prep Report: Tritons volley past Seahawks
Mariner volleyball coach Briska Wolfe did not think the Tritons played particularly well Monday night, but it was just good enough to take down the Cape Coral Seahawks 25-22, 25-18, 25-15.
“We can’t play like this tomorrow (Tuesday) night at Estero,” said Wolfe. “We will have to bring our ‘A’ game.”
Sophomore Heather Getman led the Tritons (4-1) offensively with six kills and six service aces. Senior Samantha Greenwell handed out a total of 13 assists.
“We worked more as a team than we have been and our passing was much better,” said Wolfe.
The Seahawks (0-5) had few highlights in the straight-set defeat. Junior Alysia Figueroa came off the bench to record seven blocks. Junior Alison Harper blasted five kills while senior Jennifer Le served up five aces. Emily Snyder contributed four assists.
The Seahawks, who play at Fort Myers Tuesday night, opened a 5-1 lead in the first game and made it stretch into the middle of the game before the Tritons caught up at 15-15.
Senior Abby Willis delivered a pair of ace serves and one by Greenwell put the Tritons in the lead 16-15 for the first time. A kill by Willis put the Tritons up 17-16 and sophomore Kady Ennis added a pair of aces to open the lead to 19-16.
Two aced by Le brought the Seahawks back within 20-19, but they never regained the lead.
Mariner pulled in front 4-2 in the second game, but the two teams went back and forth for several side-outs. Leading 12-10, Sophomore Tristan Miller served five straight points to open a 17-10 lead and the Tritons never looked back.
The Seahawks hurt their own cause with a number of volleys into the net and out of bounds.
Willis made two kills in a row to close out the second game 25-18.
The Seahawks managed to overcome a 4-0 deficit to start the third game and hung close before taking a 14-11 advantage with senior Erica Hoegler on the service line for five straight points. The Tritons hit two into the net and were long with two others before regrouping.
With Miller serving, the Tritons turned a 14-12 deficit into a 15-14 lead. After hitting a return out of bounds to knot the score at 15-15, Getman served out the match. Two of her aces came during that final nine-point stretch.
The Seahawks mishit four volleys down the stretch to seal their own fate.
After making the Seahawks run a series of “suicide sprints” after the game, coach Lindsey Conley had little to say about the match.
“It was an off night,” Conley said, “except for Figueroa who came off the bench and played well.”
After taking on the powerful Green Wave Tuesday night, the Seahawks will go gunning for their first victory of the season Wednesday at Gateway Charter.
Ida Baker 3, Dunbar 0: Ida Baker posted its third victory of the season Monday against an improving Dunbar squad 25-11, 25-13, 25-8.
“We played well as a team and pulled together,” said Baker coach Renee Van Horn. “We had to be on our toes against them and I tried some different matchups on the floor. All the girls rose to the occasion.”
Five players contributed five kills apiece for the Bulldogs – Brittney Benvie, Madison Kobs, Brenna Hambsch, Payton Van Horn and Alexis Ross. Kobs also handed out 16 assists while Kali Nordquist had seven assists to go with five service aces.
The Bulldogs (3-1) play at Estero Tuesday night.

At Coral Oaks: Monday’s match got a late start and endured two weather delays, but made it to completion with Fort Myers (154) earning two wins over Mariner (186) and Estero (203).
Medalist honors went to Mike Andre of Fort Myers, who carded a 34 despite a double-bogey on the final hole. John Lowery contributed to the cause with a 36.
Dean Hofer led the Tritons with a 38 while Tyler Till added 42.
“Dean played better today, more like a No. 1,” Mariner coach James Harris said. “He let a couple of holes get away. And Till turned in his best score.”
