Prep Report: Conditioning helps Baker volley past Estero

The Ida Baker Bulldogs pulled out a tight match with Estero Tuesday night, outlasting the District 4A-11 rival Wildcats 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23.

“It was a close, tight match all the way,” said Baker coach Rene Van Horn. “I made some changes in game three. We got down and couldn’t come all the way back, but we came back strong in fame four. Our girls are in good physical condition, which helped.”

Payton Van Horn delivered 16 kills to go with 11 digs to lead the Bulldogs, who also got nine kills from Alexis Ross. Madison Kobs handed out 20 assists while Kali Nordquist distributed 12 assists to go with 12 digs. Lexi Goldberg came through with a dozen digs of her own.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 district) host Island Coast Wednesday night.

Fort Myers 3, Cape Coral 0: Despite being swept 25-7, 25-11, 25-10, Cape Coral rose to the challenge at Fort Myers Tuesday night.

“We played better against a better opponent,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley.

Alysia Figueroa had one kill for the Seahawks, but also contributed two service aces and one block. Cassie Maselter contributed two kills and Dana Windey made two blocks.

The Seahawks (0-6) go looking for their first win of the season Wednesday night at Gateway Charter.

Riverdale 3, North Fort Myers 0: Riverdale squeezed past North Fort Myers 25-20, 25-22, 25-15 Tuesday night.

Jessica Wagner delivered 12 kills to lead the Red Knights while Miranda Ashby added six kills and 13 digs. Susie McKeever contributed five kills

The Red Knights (1-4) play at Mariner next Tuesday.

Cypress Lake 3, Mariner 0: Cypress Lake pounded Mariner Tuesday night 25-11, 25-13, 25-11.

The Tritons (4-2) did not play well enough to mount a serious challenge. Their next test is Monday at Dunbar.

Seacrest 3, Oasis 0: Seacrest prevailed over Oasis 25-14, 25-9, 25-16 Tuesday, keeping the Sharks winless on the season.

Oasis (0-4) hosts Community Christian on Tuesday.

Swimming

At Cape Coral: Undefeated Cape Coral reeled off another boys/girls sweep Tuesday night, dominating Mariner and Island Coast. The triumphs keep both teams undefeated at 6-0.

The Seahawk girls won 10 of the 11 events to garner 148 points to 97 for Mariner and 26 for Island Coast. Kenzie Greene was the only two-event winner for the Seahawks, taking the 200 IM and 100 backstroke events.

Kira Finan highlighted the meet with a personal-best time of 2:43.81 in finishing second in the 200 freestyle.

Andrew Greene, J.D. Guillard and Alex Potter posted personal-best times in carrying the Seahawks to a 158-109 win over the Tritons.

Cape is idle until Tuesday when they take on Ida Baker, Dunbar and Estero at FGCU.

Oasis sweeps: Oasis swept both the boys’ and girls’ tri-meets Tuesday with Golden Gate and St. John Neumann.

The Oasis boys amassed 136 points to easily outswim Golden Gate (56) and Neumann (14). The girls, meanwhile, garnered 104 points to 62 for Golden Gate and 51 for Neumann.

Vincent Perstadt led the Sharks by breaking six minutes for the first time in the 500 freestyle event, touching the wall first in 5:23.

Morgan Reeve paced the girls by winning the 200 freestyle.

Boys Golf

At Coral Oaks: Dean Hofer claimed medalist honors with a 36 Tuesday to lead Mariner to a double victory over Cape Coral and Island Coast.

Hofer, John Inkster and Jordan Kenney with 45s paced the Tritons to a team score of 179, easily outscoring Cape Coral with 215 and Island Coast with 221.

Mitch Marinack led the Seahawks with a 50 while Jordan Carr topped Island Coast with 44.

Mariner participates in the Ida Baker Invitational Friday at Coral Oaks.

At Magnolia Landing: Anthony Myers fired an even-par 36 and Tyler Doyle added 39 Tuesday to lead Ida Baker to a 157-214 victory over North Fort Myers.

Kyle Schulte and Dylan Fine each added 41s for the Bulldogs (4-0), who host a nine-team, 18-hole invitational tournament at 11 a.m. Friday at Coral Oaks Golf Course.

Teams participating in the invitational include Fort Myers, Mariner, Naples, Gulf Coast, Port Charlotte, Venice, Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch in addition to the host Bulldogs.

Zach Holton and Eric Schnellhall carded matching 47s to pace the Red Knights.

ECS’ Jake Sherwin (41), Garrett Lee (43) and Matt Hovis (47) all carded lower scores than SW Florida Christian’s low round by Bryce Reed of 55.

ECS (2-1) faces St. John Neumann Thursday in Naples.

At Gateway: Gina Falvey claimed medalist honors with a low round of 41 Tuesday, but Oasis lost a tri-match with Lemon Bay and Bishop Verot.

Hannah Lee and Madelynn Orth both carded 60 for the Sharks while Lee Dozier turned in a 72.

Cross Country

At Evangelical Christian: The host Sentinels swept both the boys’ and girls’ meets over Southwest Florida Christian and Oasis Tuesday.

In the boys’ meet, ECS placed in the top seven finishers to score 15 compared to 80 for Southwest Florida Christian an Oasis did not have a full squad to earn a team score.

In the girls’ meet, ECS collected 17 points to 62 for SWFC and no score for Oasis.

At Mariner: North Fort Myers ran away with both tri-meets with Mariner and Island Coast Tuesday.

Red Knights boys finished in the first four places to claim 19 points and beat Mariner (42) and Island Coast (83). Seah Hurley led the parade, followed in order by Austin Paz, Dan Hafer and Jonte Beerbower.

Travis Pacheco and Nick Finch led the Tritons runners in fifth and sixth, respectively, while Constantine Notte was Island Coast’s top finisher in seventh place.

Five Red Knights girls placed in the top six finishers to garner 19 points to 51 for Mariner and 77 for Island Coast.

North’s Chelsea Humbert was the overall winner with Mariner’s Elizabeth Burchers second. The next four runners were Red Knights Ciera Hall, Kaitlyn Kunz, Morgan Wilder and Rachel Perkins.
