Cape nets season’s first win
The Cape Coral Seahawks seized control of themselves and the match Wednesday night and conquered Gateway Charter 25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-11 for their season’s first volleyball victory.
“We finally played serious Cape volleyball,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley. “We played more out game and played like we know how.”
The Seahawks (1-6) had a good statistical night, led by junior Alysia Figueroa with 12 kills, six service aces and one block. Dana Windey added five kills, two blocks and two aces while Alison Harper and Kristi Maselter contributed four kills apiece. Harper also had seven aces.
Katherine Habuda came through with three kills and three blocks, Emily Snyder had five aces and Jennifer Le chipped in with two kills and three aces.
This all comes on the heels of a straight-set loss Tuesday night at Fort Myers, a match that could be looked back upon as a turning point for the Seahawks, who host Port Charlotte Monday.
Ida Baker 3, Island Coast 0: Brenna Hambsch led Ida Baker with eight kills while Hannah Kelly and Payton Van Horn killed six each in a 25-10, 25-8, 25-8 win over Island Coast.
Aces were wild, too, with Alexis Ross delivering four while Whitney Bennett and Van Horn had three aces apiece. Madison Kobs handed out 20 assists and Kali Nordquist with nine.
The Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 district) host Cypress Lake Tuesday night.
