Prep Report: Seahawks making big splash
So far, the Cape Coral Seahawks swim teams – both the boys and the girls – have been untouchable. Undefeated through their first six opponents.
The Seahawks made it 6-0 Tuesday night with dominating triumphs over city rivals Mariner and Island Coast. Cape’s boys rolled up 158 points to 109 for the Tritons. Cape’s girls raked in 148 points to 97 for Mariner and 26 for Island Coast.
“This team has been a lot of fun to watch,” said Seahawks coach Dianne Kimble. “For the amount of new kids we have I’m surprised we are doing as well as we are.”
The Seahawks graduated a lot of seniors off last year’s team. Kimble said she has a combined 63 swimmers this season compared to 70 last year.
“They’re getting better all the time,” said Kimble. “Several kids who swam the first time with us last year decided they liked it and took up competitive swimming year-round. Now they are growing by leaps and bounds.”
Both squads won first place in 10 of the 11 events. In five of those events the girls took first and second while the boys equaled the feat in seven events.
Mariner’s girls scored their only individual win in the 200 freestyle relay. Mariner boys claimed first in the 400 medley relay.
Cape’s Kenzie Greene was the only two-event winner of the night, taking the 200 IM in 2:39.62 and 100 backstroke in 1:18.14.
Kira Finan deserved a highlight mention with a personal-best time of 2:43.81 to finish second in the 200 freestyle.
Andrew Greene, J.D. Guillard and Alex Potter posted personal-best times in carrying the Seahawks to victory.
Cape is idle until Tuesday when they take on Ida Baker, Dunbar and Estero at FGCU.
“There are a lot of good teams out there,” Kimble said of the Seahawks’ chance of extending their unbeaten streak. “I’m really nervous about facing Estero, Fort Myers and Riverdale down the line.”
