Coleman gets start in Miami
Former Mariner High School and Florida Gulf Coast University pitcher Casey Coleman will start for the Chicago Cubs today in Miami against the Florida Marlins.
The Cape Coral native will be making his sixth start for the Cubs since his call-up from the minor leagues. He enters Saturday’s game (first pitch 7:10 p.m.) with a 1-2 record and 5.11 ERA.
Anibal Sanchez (12-9, 3.35) is scheduled to start for the Marlins.
Coleman has gone at least six innings in each of his last four starts for the Cubs and is coming off a solid showing at Milwaukee last Sunday when gave up just one run over six innings. In all, Coleman has made nine appearances for the Cubs with the first four coming out of the bullpen.
His first career win came in the first game after the retirement of Cubs manager Lou Piniella. In a 9-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Aug. 23, Coleman pitched 6 1/3 innings and helped his own cause with an RBI single.
The Coleman family is the first to have three generations of pitchers reach the major leagues. Casey’s father, Joe, played from 1965-79, making the 1972 All-Star Game as a member of the Detroit Tigers. His grandfather, Joe, was named an All-Star in 1948, highlighting a 10-year career (1942-55).
Casey and his father also are the eighth father-son combination to have played for the Cubs, but the first father-son pitching combination to appear for the team. Joe was a member of the Cubs’ organization in 1976.
