Thibadeau helping Cape heal
Injuries are starting to mount up for the Cape Coral Seahawks. Even coach Brad Metheny was wearing a boot on his foot on the sidelines Thursday night.
“I told the kids (at practice) I owed them two wind sprints and messed up my heel on the second one,” Metheny said.
He hopes both his and his players’ injuries will heal quickly.
One injury at the runningback position has opened the door for Dustin Thibadeau to get some carries and he has not wasted the opportunity. Thibadeau ran for three touchdowns to spark the Seahawks to a 35-15 victory over North Fort Myers Thursday night at Dave Warkentin Field.
Metheny thought the defense played well, but remains concerned about how the injuries at key positions will affect the team.
“We had three more high ankle injuries tonight,” he said. “Our team was kind of a patchwork with injuries.”
To compensate, Metheny is switching players to different positions.
After trading turnovers to start the game, the Seahawks drove 44 yards in five plays, sparked by Bryan Greenwell’s 29-yard pass to Prince Holloway. Thibadeau punched it in from three yards out for the first of his three TDs.
Cape’s T.J. Jiles intercepted Chase Wildman’s pass and raced 58 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
On fourth down, North ran a fake punt and Rod Forvil ran for 38 yards to the Cape 1-yard line. Wildman sneaked it in on the next play.
Cape responded with a 45-yard drive that ended on Thibadeau’s second TD run from seven yards out.
Jiles intercepted his second pass and returned it 22 yards to the Red Knights’ 8. Two plays later, Holloway scored from six yards out on an end around.
Just before the half, North’s Corey Jackson was injured on a kickoff, delaying the game 25 minutes while paramedics stabilized him and transported him to a hospital.
Thibadeau’s third touchdown came in the fourth quarter. Greenwell put the Seahawks in position for the score with a 51-yard run on a scramble.
North put together one last drive with four minutes left in the game, relying almost entirely on the run. Johnny Garrow ran it in from two yards out.
Overall, the Red Knights turned the ball over six times.
North coach Barry Goettemoeller was not pleased with his team’s performance.
“We didn’t play very well,” he said. “I thought we’d be ready, but if you don’t take care of the football in this league you won’t win football games. We made too many mistakes.”
Next Friday, North (1-2) entertains Fort Myers (2-1) while Cape (3-0) hosts Port Charlotte.
