Prep Report: Baker girls finally tee off
The girls’ golf team at Ida Baker High is finally up and running after several delays.
Chris Ewing was just hired to coach the team which played their first match of the season Tuesday at Del Tura Golf Club. The team grew to seven girls just this week.
The Bulldogs took care of business in their inaugural match, beating Riverdale 197-204.
“It was nice to get the first win,” said Ewing. “The girls played well and did a good job even though it was a bit windy.”
While Riverdale’s Katie Cross took medalist honors with a score of 36, the Bulldogs prevailed with three scores in the 40s.
Kaitlin Schafe and Cathy Wainey both shot 40 and Samm Mattson came through with 49. Heather Radford added a 68.
“Just four girls played today,” said Ewing. “The others are not ready to go. I have a lot of work with them.”
Ewing, a Cape Coral resident, spent 13 years at Kelly Greens and was head golf pro before he left to complete a degree in management at FGCU.
“I have never coached at the high school level before,” Ewing said. “This is a good opportunity for me. I have experience with teaching beginners and intermediate players.”
“He has great patience to work with the diversity of skill on our team,” said Baker athletic director Carl McAloose. “We have a couple of girls who have never played before.”
