Major litter cleanup set for Saturday
A major litter cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25 at 8 a.m. at 7th St. SW and Golfview Blvd. and is being sponsored by the Lehigh Initiative in partnership with the Lee County Sherriff’s Office. The clean-up is part of the Initiative’s Keep Lehigh Acres Beautiful.
The Lehigh Initiative developed out of the Weed & Seed Program.
Those promoting the cleanup are encouraging residents in that area and others in the community who are interested in helping to keep Lehigh “neat” to come to the cleanup, said John Miller, vice president of Lehigh Clean Sweep.
Volunteers do not have to bring bags or tools or water as they will be provided by Lehigh Initiative. It is hoped that as many as 100 will turn out. In other cleanups, more than 100 people have turned out in some neighborhoods to pick up litter.
“We’ll fill a Dumpster for sure,” said Miller. He also said those who want to help should look for the tent on Gulf Blvd. He said the cleanup should last about two hours.
“We appreciate the young people who have turned out and helped us in the past and many of them say they don’t throw trash out of their car windows anymore after seeing what a neighborhoods like when filled with litter,” Miller said.
In the past, Miller said more than a ton of litter has been collected in a large Dumpsters at cleanups.
