Seahawks sack Pirates, 38-24
One of Cape Coral High senior quarterback Bryan Greenwell’s goals for himself at the beginning of the season was to break the school record for passing yards and touchdowns in a game. It only took him three games into his first season as starter to take down one of those records.
Greenwell threw for five touchdowns Friday night at Dave Warkentin Field, guiding the Seahawks past the Port Charlotte Pirates 38-24.
“I knew Nate Allen held the record with four touchdowns,” said Greenwell, ” I set it as one of my goals before the season, I was confident I could get it. I have some good receivers to help me out.”
After using a physical ground game on their only drive of the first quarter, a drive that ended inside the Pirate 5-yard line, the Seahawks decided to go to Greenwell and the passing attack the next time they got within scoring range. That decision paid off as Greenwell found receiver Prince Holloway on a quick screen, and Holloway did the rest, squeezing through some blocks and into the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown.
After a fumble recovery by Seahawk Jalen Edwards on the Pirates’ first play of their next drive, Greenwell hit his other favorite target Jovan Ojeda on the very next play for a 24-yard touchdown. Port Charlotte finally got on the board on their next drive, with a 35-yard field goal by Brion Ashley.
“We beat ourselves a lot in the first half,” Cape Coral coach Brad Matheny said. “We had seven penalties, a huge bad snap for a loss, way too many mistakes in one half, but we turned it around in the second half.”
The Seahawks received the kickoff to start the second half, and after a good return and long run, the Seahawks were deep in Pirate territory and looking to score again. After a few scrappy runs by Dustin Thidbadeau, Greenwell found Ojeda on another slant, this time from six yards.
Port Charlotte did not give in after falling behind 23-3, as senior running back Alwyn Laplace took the offense on his shoulders and led a 12-play drive capped by a four-yard sweep for a touchdown.
After another good kickoff return, it did not take Cape long to score again as Greenwell went back to Holloway for a five-yard touchdown pass.
Greenwell found Holloway one more time in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard scoring pass. Greenwell completed 11 of 16 passes for 139 yards, and Holloway finished with six catches for 81 yards and rushed for 86 yards.
