Student, families have program at Veterans Park school
Families Building Better Readers at Veterans Park Academy for the arts at 49 Homestead Rd. in Lehigh is a program for the parents, caretakers, and children in the elementary grades. It addresses the needs of all levels of readers, but especially benefits those who are struggling or beginning readers, said Dale Houchin, the school principal.
It is scheduled for Sept. 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is for the families of Veteran’s Park Academy for the Arts students in Grades K-3. Families will be served supper, then the opening session will begin, he said.
Each participating family receives a “Tool Kit” that includes a manual with all of the directions for the activities they will be learning, a book, a dry erase board and dry erase markers, index cards, a ruler and a pen (things they will need to do the activities at home).
Parents will break out into groups where they will learn games and activities through a series of “blueprints,” which are taught by teachers at the school.
School-aged children will participate in a parallel workshop where they will learn a play to present to their families at the end of the evening. Childcare is provided for pre-school children and door prizes will be given out. The school’s business partners, including The Home Depot and Costco, help with donations and the teachers volunteer their time.
