Prep Report: ‘Go all out’ play sparks Tritons’ comeback win
Momentum swings were numerous Thursday night when a pair of Cape rivals squared off for a spirited District 4A-11 volleyball match.
It was the Ida Baker Bulldogs who put aside a first-game loss to take a 2-1 advantage, but it was the Mariner Tritons who ended up claiming a 25-22, 13-25, 14-25, 25-20, 16-14 victory.
“This was a total team effort,” said Tritons coach Briska Wolfe. “It’s hard to come back after losing two straight games, but we just got our heads together and said let’s go all out. Then we won the fourth game and that turned it around for us.”
Senior Abby Willis provided the power with 12 kills with Victoria Webb-Martin adding four kills. Sophomore Heather Getman threw in five service aces and sophomore Tristan Miller contributed 14 digs.
The Tritons claimed game one in a tight series, but the Bulldogs answered by winning the next two by the widest margins of the night.
Mariner rallied to take game four by five points and game five by the mandatory two points to seal the victory.
Junior Alexis Ross led the Bulldogs with 18 kills. Sophomore Lexi Goldberg and junior Kali Nordquist carried the defense with 25 and 18 digs, respectively. Junior setter Madison Kobs distributed 28 assists.
“We were missing a couple of our soccer players, but the girls who were there played hard tonight,” said Bulldogs coach Rene Van Horn.
The Bulldogs (5-7) host Fort Myers Tuesday. The Tritons (7-5) are at Lemon Bay Tuesday.
North Fort Myers 3, Cape Coral 0: Junior middle hitter Jessica Wagner dominated the net for 17 kills and seven blocks Thursday night to power North Fort Myers to a 25-8, 25-9, 25-14 victory over Cape Coral.
The Red Knights raced in front 10-0 in the first game and never looked back.
“She (Wagner) controlled the net and that tends to open it up for our other hitters,” said North coach Jeremy Ridgeo.
Junior Miranda Ashby contributed six kills while senior Jessica Petrucci served up six aces. Junior setter Susie McKeever was credited with 27 assists.
Junior Alysia Figueroa with three kills and four blocks, sophomore Kristi Maselter with five kills and two blocks, and senior Cassie Maselter with four kills and one block led the Seahawks. Sophomore Dana Windey contributed three blocks while junior Emily Snyder added seven assists.
“I moved my setter (Kristi Maselter) to middle hitter,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley. “She swings very well and hit the ball well and probably will remain a hitter. We played defense better and got some digs shown in the better score in game three.”

The Seahawks (2-11) host Riverdale Tuesday.
