Youngsters benefit from golf

By Staff | Oct 7, 2010

For the Kids Foundation will benefit from the Golf Classic fundraiser Oct. 23 at Coral Oaks Golf Course for six programs it provides for children diagnosed with cancer.

The foundation is a non-profit that provides humor and laughter to children coping with being hospitalized for cancer at the Children’s Hospital. It was formed to reach out to the children in and out of the hospital for treatments.

Executive director Sean Hoover said he and his wife organized the foundation about three years ago after their son, Ethan, was diagnosed with cancer and became a patient at the oncology clinic at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. He has been cancer free for four years.

“We, of course, were heart broken over the diagnosis of our son, but quickly decided to not feel so sorry for him and to support him as much as we could,” he said.

Hoover said after many trips in and out of the hospital, he realized the children were like other ordinary children who just wanted to play. The family began supporting the staff and other programs offered at the hospital, eventually leading them to provide money and clothing to other children not as fortunate or without stable families.

The golf classic will have ab 8 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $85 per player ($300 foursome and $350 foursome with a hole sponsor.
