Prep Report: Seahawks rally to avenge loss to Tritons

By Staff | Oct 8, 2010

The taste of revenge was sweet for the Cape Coral Seahawks on the volleyball court at crosstown rival Mariner Thursday night.

Things started rather wobbly for the Seahawks, who dug themselves into a deep hole early with net violations, mishits and volleys out of bounds against the host Tritons, who opened leads of 6-0, 14-3 and 20-7.

That’s when the bottom fell out for the Tritons as the Seahawks stormed back to win the match 25-27, 25-20, 26-24, 25-19. The win avenges a straight-set defeat to the Tritons a month ago.

“We’ve done a lot of work since that first meeting,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley. “We’ve changed positions for some players. We have a different middle hitter (Kristi Maselter, 7 kills, 9 blocks) and Erica (Hoegler) found out just before the game that she was our setter tonight. She stepped in and filled hole due to injury.”

As the Tritons built their huge lead in the first game, Conley called a time out.

“I just told them to keep working hard and we pulled it out,” said Conley.

With Hoegler (6 assists) on the service line, the Seahawks started their comeback. Hoegler served four straight points to cut the Tritons’ advantage to 20-12. After a side-out, Alison Harper (8 aces) served two aces to shave the deficit to 21-15. Another side-out put freshman Kaitlin Upton on the service line.

Upton served seven straight points as the Seahawks took a 23-22 lead. The Seahawks had recorded four aces, one block and one kill during the run. The rest of the points came on Mariner mishits and unforced errors.

“We did not pass very well tonight,” said Tritons coach Briska Wolfe. “Actually, it was terrible. There’s nothing left to say.”

The game was tied again at 24-24 and 25-25 before the Tritons managed to pull it out on a kill by Heather Getman and an ace serve by Abby Willis (16 kills).

Despite the Tritons taking the first game 27-25, the momentum had shifted to the Seahawks, who opened leads of 5-1 and 14-8 in the second game. The score remained withing a few points until the Seahawks grabbed a 19-18 lead. With the Tritons obliging by serving into the net or out of bounds three times, the Seahawks outscored their hosts 6-2 the rest of the way and ended it on an ace by Jennifer Le.

The Tritons looked like they might regroup in the third game, but wilted toward the end when Upton and Cassie Maselter (10 digs) combined to serve a stretch of eight of the nine points to put the Seahawks ahead 23-21 en route to a 26-24 win.

Perhaps the Tritons’ last gasp came at the start of the fourth game when they opened a 6-0 lead with three aces by Getman and a kill by Cody Sawyer.

The Seahawks came back again to take a 10-9 lead. The Seahawks took the lead for good at 16-15 and recorded nine of the next 13 points to wrap up the victory.

The Seahawks (3-12) participate in a tournament Saturday at Estero and host Ida Baker on Tuesday.

The Tritons (7-6) play at South Fort Myers on Wednesday and Ida Baker on Thursday.

Lemon Bay 3, Ida Baker 0: Lemon Bay stuffed Ida Baker 25-9, 25-14, 25-17 Thursday night.

Oasis 3, Community Christian 0: Larra Becklehaupt came through with eight kills and nine digs to lead Oasis to victory over Port Charlotte Community Christian 25-9, 25-16, 25-19 Thursday night.
