Prep Report: Knights clip Seahawks’ wings
McKeever handed out a total of 40 assists with Jessica Wagner getting more than half of those for 21 kills to power North Fort Myers to a 25-17, 25-3, 25-19 volleyball victory over Cape Coral Monday night.
Miranda Ashby added six kills while Paige Engh served up nine aces and Jessica Petrucci was credited with 10 digs for the Red Knights (9-10), who visit Cypress Lake Tuesday night.
“Susie and Jessica were on the same wave length tonight,” said Red Knights coach Jeremy Ridgeo.
The Seahawks were flying high after a five-game, one-day tournament Saturday at Estero in which they went 3-2 to win their bracket.
“We didn’t serve receive well at all,” Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley said of Monday’s thumping.
Junior Alison Harper had just five kills and sophomore Kristi Maselter added three kills and three blocks.
At Estero, the Seahawks lost their first two pool play contests to Cypress Lake (25-8, 25-17) and Port Charlotte (25-5, 25-6). That dropped them into the bronze bracket they reeled off three wins against Island Coast, Palmetto Ridge and South Fort Myers.
Cape bounced Island Coast 25-10, 25-10 and Palmetto Ridge to reach the bracket final against South. The Wolfpack took the first game 25-23, but the Seahawks rallied to take the next two 25-19 and 15-8 to win the title.
“We started to play well against Cypress Lake, but were shut down by Port Charlotte,” said Conley. “I made some changes and they worked very well.”
Conley moved freshman Katie Upton from libero to setter for the final three games, a position Upton never practiced before at Cape. Senior Cassie Maselter moved to libero. Three JV girls joined the team, including sophomore Ashley Hunter who recorded her first varsity kills (three) and contributed six blocks.
“I’m very proud of them,” Conley said. “We are starting to come together as a team.”
Overall, Harper contributed 11 kills, nine aces and 13 digs; Kristi Maselter added 11 kills, 11 blocks and eight digs; senior Jennifer Le had seven kills, eight aces; Cassie Maselter served eight aces; senior Erica Hoegler had 10 digs and handed out seven assists over two games; Upton finished with 12 assists.
The Seahawks (6-15) host Ida Baker Tuesday night and play at Port Charlotte Wednesday night.
