Prep Report: Pirates sink Seahawks

By Staff | Oct 14, 2010

In their third match in as many nights, the Cape Coral Seahawks gave a valiant effort Wednesday night only to be beaten by Port Charlotte 25-9, 23-25, 25-18, 25-9. It also was the second time the Seahawks faced the Pirates in a matter of four days.

Wednesday’s result was much more tenuous than Saturday’s meeting in a tournament at Estero when the Pirates dispatched the Seahawks in two straight games.

“We played them much better than we did Saturday,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley. “It’s been a long, long week, but this is the best volleyball I’ve seen from our girls in the past five days, and all season.”

The Seahawks won the second game of the match and stayed close in the third game before losing momentum.

“I like the way the girls are playing in their new positions,” said Conley. “I like how they are playing next to each other. It has forced more hustle plays out of them and our front row is swinging a lot better resulting in a lot more kills.”

Kristi Maselter led the Seahawks with six kills, five blocks and four service aces. Alison Harper added five kills, five digs and four aces while Alysia Figueroa chipped in with six kills and three blocks.

Dana Windey contributed four kills and four blocks while Katie Upton and Erica Hoegler each added six digs. Upton also had seven assists with Emily Snyder adding four assists.

The Seahawks (6-17) host Island Coast Tuesday in their final home game of the season.

Ida Baker 3, Cape Coral 2: Baker overcame deficits several times Tuesday night en route to a marathon District 4A-11 volleyball victory over Cape Coral at the Seahawks’ Nest.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” Baker coach Rene Van Horn said after the 24-26, 17-25, 28-26, 26-24, 15-7 win. “Everyone contributed to this one. Even after we lost the first two games, the girls came back. They didn’t get their heads down. They played well and played with heart. They really wanted it tonight.”

Four of the games were extremely close throughout, never more than a few points separating the teams. Three of the games went beyond the designated 25 points in the best-of-five set.

Payton Van Horn’s double-double led the Bulldogs with 13 kills and 13 digs. Brenna Hambsch contributed nine kills to go with nine blocks while Kali Nordquist had a team-high 23 digs. Lexi Goldberg added 19 digs. Sierra Myers served up four aces and Brittney Benvie had four blocks.

The Seahawks were led by Kristi Maselter’s triple-double effort of 11 kills, 10 blocks and 11 digs. Alysia Figueroa chipped in with seven kills and two blocks while Alison Harper knocked down 10 kills to go with eight digs and six aces. Cassie Maselter contributed three kills, seven aces and eight digs with Jennifer Le adding three kills and 10 digs. Erica Hoegler was credited with 14 digs and setter Katie Upton handed out a dozen assists.

“I basically played seven girls the entire way,” said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley, “and I think in game five they just got tired.”

The Seahawks played five matches (12 games total) in a tournament on Saturday at Estero, three games Monday night in a loss to North Fort Myers and five more Tuesday.

Baker (6-9, 3-6 district) hosts Mariner Thursday night.
