Local sailors earn Junior Olympic medals

Twenty-eight local sailors competed last weekend in the United States Junior Olympic River Romp Regatta on the Caloosahatchee River, earning eight medals in their respective fleets.

The Lee County sailors joined more than 200 others from around Florida in the two-day competition sanctioned by the U.S. Sailing Association. Sailors launched from the beach in North Fort Myers.

Sailors ranging in age from 7 to 18 competed in International Optimist, Laser and Club 420 classes. The annual River Romp Regatta is the second largest youth regatta in Florida and one of 25 Junior Olympic sanctioned events.

Edison Sailing Center fleet winners were Benjamin Althouse, Mark Sorensen in the Optimist Green group.

Other Edison sailors winning medals included: (Optimist Green) William McCarthy, Fort Myers, 13 (medalist); Max Slafer, Fort Myers, 24 (medalist). (Laser 4.7) Adam Winton, Fort Myers, 2 (medalist); Alicia Muscato, North Port, 3 (medalist); Nicholas Reid, Fort Myers, 5 (medalist). (Club 420) Chalmers Pierce/Austin Buonsignore, both of Fort Myers, 2 (medalist); Ali Yarbrough/William Gubbins, of Estero and Miami, respectfully, 3 (medalist).
