Prep Report: Red Knights set record for service aces

By Staff | Oct 21, 2010

Senior night was a special night for the North Fort Myers Red Knights volleyball team, and not just because it was the final home match for the four senior players.

For the second time this week, the Red Knights set a new school record for number of service aces in a single match. They served up 30 Monday night on their home floor against Island Coast, but it only stood for two days.

The Red Knights hammered out a new record 33 aces Wednesday night again on their home floor in a 25-5, 25-7, 25-8 triumph over Dunbar.

“It was a special night for the seniors who had been playing for me for three years,” said Red Knights coach Jeremy Ridgeo. “We had a good crowd and it was a good way for them to play their last home game.”

The seniors – Catherine Byrd, Jessica Petrucci, Alex Smith and Paige Engh – combined for 13 of the aces and 10 kills. Junior Jessica Wagner delivered six aces and 11 kills while junior setter Susie McKeever added five aces to go with 25 assists.

“Serves and serve receive are two factors we always work on in practice,” said Ridgeo. “They were hitting their spots tonight, and we minimized our missed serves.”

The Red Knights (12-10) now turn their attention to the District 4A-11 Tournament that starts Monday at Ida Baker.

Estero faces South Fort Myers in the opening match at 5 p.m. Monday, followed by Mariner and Cape Coral at 7 p.m.

The Red Knights go up against Lemon Bay at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinal round, followed by Riverdale meeting the Mariner-Cape winner at 3 p.m., Fort Myers against the Estero-South winner at 5 p.m. and host Ida Baker faces Cypress Lake in the final match at 7 p.m.

The winners advance to the semifinal round at 5 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday with the championship match set for 7 p.m. Thursday.

Cape Coral 3, Island Coast 0: The Cape Coral Seahawks closed out the regular season campaign Tuesday night with a sweeping victory over Island Coast on senior night at the Seahawks Nest.

The Seahawks had success at the service line, banging out ace after ace in a 25-8, 27-25, 25-14 victory.

Alison Harper led the servers with 12 aces to go with five kills. Senior Jennifer Le contributed five aces and three kills, senior Cassie Maselter had four aces and three kills, Kristi Maselter had three aces and five kills and senior Erica Hoegler added one ace and five kills.

The Seahawks (7-17) play Mariner at 7 p.m. Monday in the first round of the District 4A-11 Tournament at Ida Baker.
