By Staff | Oct 28, 2010

The quarterfinal round of the District 4A-11 volleyball tournament went quickly, like clockwork Tuesday at Ida Baker.

The eight-team field was pared to the final four who will go head-to-head Wednesday in the semifinal round starting at 5 p.m.

All four quarterfinal games were won in straight-set fashion, 3-0, by the top seeded teams – Lemon Bay, Riverdale, Fort Myers and Cypress Lake.

Host Ida Baker was victimized by Cypress Lake 25-10, 25-17, 25-11 in the final match of the session. The Bulldogs’ season ends with a 9-11 record to show for it.

“I am proud of our girls,” said Baker coach Rene Van Horn. “For being a young team the did play better. Perhaps next year we can pick up where we left off and drive forward.”

Juniors Brenna Hambsch and Payton Van Horn led the Bulldogs with four kills apiece. Van Horn added four blocks and Hambsch three blocks. Junior Madison Kobs handed out nine assists while junior Rachelle Radford contributed eight digs and sophomore Lexi Goldberg six digs.

Earlier, Lemon Bay ousted North Fort Myers in the session’s most tightly contested match 25-21, 27-25 and 25-11.

“They (Lemon Bay) havae some power, some pop,” said North coach Jeremy Ridgeo. “There were not a lot of aces, but we hung in there with them.”

Junior Jessica Wagner was credited with 12 kills with seven by junior Miranda Ashby. Junior setter Susie McKeever handed out 23 assists.

“We were up late in the second game, but couldn’t win it at the end,” said Ridgeo. “Things did not go our way and they won it on a stuff block. We did not recover very well from that.”

Fresh off Monday’s winning duel against Mariner, the Cape Coral Seahawks were knocked out by Riverdale, but did not go quietly 25-9, 25-7, 25-21.

“We played well and hung in there with them,” said Cape coach Lindsey Conley. “Then we started making some mistakes.”

Senior Jennifer Le led the way with five kills and junior Alison Harper added four kills. Sophomore Kristi Maselter made three blocks to go with 15 digs and junior setter Emily Snyder had just six assists.

“We played a strong game one, but made some mistakes,” said Conley. “We played really good, we just didn’t win enough points.”

Top seeded Fort Myers took care of Estero 25-4, 25-11, 25-19. The Green Wave open the semifinal round at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Lemon Bay. Riverdale and Cypress Lake square off in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday.
