Seahawks wary of Bulldogs
With their second straight District 4A-12 championship assured, the Cape Coral Seahawks take on the crosstown rival Ida Baker Bulldogs Friday night in the final district encounter of the season.
The Seahawks (7-1, 2-0 district) are preparing as if the Bulldogs (0-8, 0-2) will throw anything and everything at them at Bulldogs Stadium.
“We have to be conscious of all the possibilities,” said Seahawks coach Brad Metheny. “They have nothing to lose, so we have to anticipate trick plays, fake kicks and all kinds of things. Baker is better than their record shows, I believe, because they play hard all the time, so we have to get after them.”
The Bulldogs are in fourth place in the four-team district standings, but when rivals collide often numbers can be disregarded. They are playing to avoid going 0-10 for the third time in school history. They were 0-10 in 2005 and 2006, their first two varsity seasons. The Bulldogs were more competitive the last three seasons, a combined 19-12, and made their first postseason appearance last fall as the district runner-up to the Seahawks.
“Maybe there is not as much importance on this game as there was last year,” said Bulldogs coach Brian Conn, “but we want to keep the guys positive and ride the emotion of it being a rivalry. Our kids know theirs and they know ours. We are a young team just trying to get better each week.”
The Seahawks know about going 0-10. The last time they did it was 2002. They are wrapping up their seventh consecutive .500-or-better season since then and their fourth consecutive postseason appearance.
“We’ve got to perform better than we have the last couple of weeks,” said Metheny. “As a team and a (coaching) staff we know we haven’t performed very well, but we had a good practice session (Tuesday) and we have to do the things we need to do to get this turned around.”
Even Metheny admits the Seahawks were lucky to pull out an 8-7 victory last week at South Fork, but makes no excuses.
“We did a lot of good things last week, but we didn’t finish them,” he said. “That was our second-best rushing performance of the year, more than 300 yards, we just didn’t get in the end zone every chance we had. We have to finish better.”
The Bulldogs will be without quarterback Sean Francis (cracked ribs) and runningback Brandon Cruz (head injury), but coming to the end of an injury-plagued season the Seahawks may be in better shape.
“We are as healthy as we have been in the last few weeks, but we have to try to keep certain guys healthy,” said Metheny. “Some of them have fought through the flu in recent weeks, but all in all we are pretty healthy.”
In the only other 4A-12 matchup Friday night, Palmetto Ridge (3-5, 1-1) and Gulf Coast (2-6, 1-1) collide to determine the district runner-up playoff berth.
District 3A-11: The Mariner Tritons (2-6, 2-1) visits undefeated South Fort Myers (8-0, 4-0) trying to salvage some bragging rights in what is left of the season.
The Tritons had their modest two-game winning streak broken last week by the Fort Myers Green Wave (4-5, 1-3), who close out the season by hosting the Bishop Verot Vikings (5-3, 1-3). The Riverdale Raiders (4-4, 3-1) are out to solidify their standing as the district runner-up when they tackle the North Fort Myers Red Knights (3-6, 1-3)
District 2B-6: The Island Coast Gators (8-1, 4-0) will put a cap on their regular season Friday by visiting the LaBelle Cowboys (1-7, 1-3) assured of their second consecutive district title no matter what happens.
Meanwhile, the Clewiston Tigers (2-5, 2-1) and Dunbar Tigers (3-5, 3-1) go after each other trying to settle which team will be the district runner-up. Also, the Gateway Charter Griffins (0-8, 0-4) are still looking for their first victory of the season at the Lake Placid Dragons (2-6, 1-2).
Elsewhere: In District 3A-12, the Lehigh Lightning (5-3, 2-3) visit the Cypress Lake Panthers (2-6, 1-4); the Lely Trojans (2-7, 1-4) are at the Barron Collier Cougars (6-2, 4-1); and the Naples Eagles (8-0, 5-0) invade the Golden Gate Titans (5-4, 1-4).
In District 2A-6, where all four teams are 1-1, the Immokalee Indians (3-5, 1-1) visit the Estero Wildcats (4-4, 1-1) and DeSoto County (4-4, 1-1) hosts Hardee County (2-6, 1-1).
In District 1B-6, the Evangelical Christian Sentinels (7-1, 5-0) look to extend their seven-game winning streak and finish an undefeated run through district rivals with a victory at the St. John Neumann Celtics (4-5, 2-3).
