Prep Report: Vikings shut out Tarpons in soccer opener
Bishop Verot opened the girls’ soccer season Thursday night with a 3-0 victory over Charlotte at Viking Stadium.
And thank goodness for the artificial turf.
“The rain came down in the last part of the first half, blowing sideways,” said Vikings coach Randy Zavada. “There were no scores during the rain, so it was not a factor in the outcome. It was a drizzle to clear for the second half.”
Nicole Linden scored the lone goal in the first half, the only score the Vikings would need. Kady Otzko and McKenna Duquette added goals in the second half. Duquette assisted on one goal and Lauren Cento had two assists.
The win is the 100th for Zavada as Vikings coach.
“Charlotte was a very good team,” Zavada said. “they had perhaps twice as many shots on goal, but we had really good shots.
The Vikings (1-0) play again Tuesday at Estero.
Four other games on the schedule were postponed – Cape Coral at Port Charlotte, Lehigh at Ida Baker, Gateway Charter at North Fort Myers and Mariner at Dunbar – were canceled or postponed by the rain that fell off and on throughout the day.
