Prep Report: Bulldogs clip Tritons, 2-0

By Staff | Nov 12, 2010

Two first-half goals was all the Ida Baker Bulldogs needed to hand crosstown rival Mariner a 2-0 girls’ soccer defeat Wednesday night at Tony McKenna Field.

Freshman Amber Hutchinson sent a pass into the middle of the field in front of the goal where sophomore Monique Elliott chipped a shot over goalkeeper Sam Greenwell’s head and just under the crossbar for the game’s first goal at the 21-minute mark.

With less than two minutes left in the opening period, junior Brittney Herrera fired a shot from the wing that Greenwell blocked, but couldn’t control. The ball bounded directly to junior Autumn Yesh for a goal from point-blank range.

Greenwell made four of her six total saves in the first half. Her counterpart for the Bulldogs, Payton Van Horn, made six saves all in the second half.

“I think we played them tight and close and had some chances,” said Tritons coach Beth Gedde. “We were missing a couple of players tonight, so I think next time we will give them a better run. We will be better prepared.”

The Tritons were on the attack most of the second half, but still only got off six shots on goal after getting just one in the first half. The Bulldogs were held to three shots on goal in the second half.

“We normally pass the ball better,” said Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski. “Mariner is a tough team, though. It was not pretty, but we will take the win.”

Elliott went down early in the second half with a lower leg injury and did not return. The Bulldogs spent the last 20 minutes with one attacker, Trepkowski said, trying to make up for Elliott’s absence.

The Tritons (2-1) play at Cape Coral and the Bulldogs (3-1) travel to Lemon Bay, both on Tuesday.

Charlotte 8, Island Coast 0: For the third night in a row, the Island Coast Gators were handed a mercy-rule shutout defeat at Charlotte.

“We’ve made more improvement in our play,” said Gators coach Tammy Bayly. “We made it into the second half tonight.”

The Gators (0-3) play at Cypress Lake Monday, continuing their 10-game season-opening stretch of away games.

Cape Coral 1, Gateway Charter 0: Freshman Mallory Gerrero gathered up a carom off the goalkeeper and sent it into the back of the net with about 10 minutes remaining to lift Cape Coral to victory at Gateway Charter.

Christina Hunt took the shot that led to Gerrero’s goal and was credited with an assist.

Goalkeeper Amanda Kopale made 11 saves to preserve the shutout. The Seahawks (2-2-1) host Mariner Tuesday.

Gulf Coast 1, Bishop Verot 1: Both goals were scored in the first half as Gulf Coast came from behind to tie Bishop Verot.

Kady Otzko scored for Verot in the first four minutes to take the lead which stood until the final three minutes of the opening period when the Sharks tied it up.

Goalkeeper Cailyn Rizzo made seven saves for the Vikings (1-1-1), who play at Gateway Tuesday.

The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 in the second half before scoring the final three goals to seal the win. Goalkeeper Rush Manterola made nine saves for the win.

“We played with a lot of heart,” said Bulldogs coach Mark Fitzpatrick. “We played a tremendous second half.”

Daniel Sharkey scored two goals and Nick Presti added the other for the Bulldogs (2-0), who host American Heritage at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Juan Rincon, David Steeb and Lucas Orellana scored the Tritons’ three goals in the first half. Travis Pacheco and Frederico Martinez were credited with assists. Goalkeeper Matt Brust made 12 saves.

The Tritons (1-1) play at Lehigh Wednesday.

Cape Coral 4, Gateway Charter 1: Cape Coral built a 3-0 lead in the first half en route to a victory at Gateway Charter.

Juan Lind, Caio Amaral, Nathan Stone and Jordan Taylor each scored one goal for the Seahawks while Olivier Benedict, Kayck Friere, Kevin Lopera and Stone got assists.

Backup goalkeeper Nico Rubio, forced into the lineup by injuries to two other keepers, made six saves for the Seahawks (2-0), who play at Estero Monday.
