Although the Mariner Tritons came away with a 1-0 victory over city rival Cape Coral Tuesday night, both teams are kicking themselves for missing multiple scoring opportunities.

“I think we played well, but we were trying to force the ball up the middle too much,” said Tritons coach Beth Gedde. “It is hard to break through a wall of four girls in the middle.”

Sophomore Ali Muro-Solis put the Tritons on the board with about 10 minutes left in the first half. Senior co-captain Kelsea Whitaker lined up for a free kick 35 yards deep and out near the left sideline. Her booming kick toward the far post found Kaitlyn Souza, who tried to steer the ball into the net, but it bounced off a set of legs and caromed in front of the net to Muro-Solis, who drilled it past reacting Seahawks goalkeeper Amanda Kopale.

“We had a lot of opportunities to score, but we let them go by, quite a few of them,” said Gedde.

The Tritons took 10 shots on goal with Kopale saving eight of those.

By comparison, the Seahawks came up empty time after time in the scoring zone and managed just two shots on goal. Both shots were saved by Tritons keeper Sam Greenwell.

“We had scoring chances,” said Seahawks coach Eric Lamboy. “We had two really good ones in front of the net and both were miskicks. That comes from being a young team.”

The Seahawks did not get off a good shot on goal until 10 minutes had elapsed in the second half, and took just six shots overall.

“Instead of getting better, I think we are getting worse,” said Lamboy. “Team chemistry is just not there yet. We are very young, but I am happy with our defense.”

The Tritons (3-1, 1-0 District 4A-11) host Dunbar Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ game.

The Seahawks (1-3-1, 0-1) visit Ida Baker for another 4A-11 contest on Thursday.

Lemon Bay 1, Ida Baker 0: A surprise first-half goal led to a surprise District 4A-11 victory by Lemon Bay over Ida Baker Tuesday night.

The Manta Rays took just one shot on goal, and it somehow found the net.

At the other end, the Bulldogs fired 47 shots, 27 of them on the goal, but not one was ruled a score.

“We even pulled our keeper for the last 14 minutes and still couldn’t get a goal,” said Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski. “We just couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”

The Bulldogs (3-2, 0-1 district) host Cape Coral in a district match Thursday with a trip to Barron Collier looming on Friday.

Baker will face Fort Myers Monday in the Bulldogs’ annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.

North Fort Myers 9, Estero 2: Sophomore Hannah Hamilton knocked in four goals to lead North Fort Myers to a District 4A-11 victory at Estero Tuesday night.

Sophomore Melinda Lukas chipped in with three goals and two assist while freshman Darian Leschewski added two goals and one assist. Tina Agostinelli made two assists and Katie Traurig assisted on one goal.

Goalkeeper Brianna Abatisti made eight saves for the Red Knights (4-0), who host Cypress Lake on Thursday.

Island Coast 3, LaBelle 2: A goal by Kennedy Adams with five minutes left broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Island Coast to its first victory of the season Tuesday night at LaBelle.

C’iasha Roberts scored the Gators’ first goal that forced a 1-1 tie at halftime. Janelle Keary’s second-half goal also tied the game at 2-2. Hayley Hood made 14 saves in goal. Adams’ game-winner also represents the Gators’ first District 3A-12 win.

The Gators (1-4, 1-0) play at Bishop Verot Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

Ida Baker 5, Lehigh 1: Nick Presti and Daniel Sharkey scored two goals apiece to propel Ida Baker to victory at Lehigh Tuesday night.

Sharkey and Presti each had an assist with Steven Dowling adding one goal and one assist. Goalkeeper Rush Manterola made nine saves before being pulled in the second half. Luis Schelickmeyer finished in goal with four saves.

The Bulldogs (3-1) play at Cape Coral Thursday night.

LaBelle 6, Island Coast 1: LaBelle handed Island Coast its first District 3A-12 defeat Tuesday night.

The Gators’ lone goal came in the second half from Dylan More. Stephen Smutney made 17 saves in goal for the Gators (0-4, 0-1), who play at Bishop Verot on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

Riverdale 37, Mariner 29: Alyssa Dodson pitched in a game-high 11 points, but is was not enough to bring Mariner a victory at Riverdale Tuesday night.

The Tritons (1-1) play at Canterbury on Monday.
