Prep Report: Verot rips I-Coast in opener

Mark Wagner and Jason Hoop led the way as Bishop Verot swamped Island Coast in the boys’ basketball season opener for both teams Monday night.

Wagner hit for a game-high 16 points to go with seven assists while Hoop added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vikings opened a comfortable 22-8 lead in the first quarter, extended it to 35-14 by halftime and coasted the rest of the way.

Kim Dal Bon led the Gators with 10 points while Terrell Griffin and Kyle Harding added eight points apiece. Griffin also pulled down 16 rebounds.

The Vikings (1-0) play at Fort Myers and the Gators (0-1) play at LaBelle Tuesday.

Cape Coral 75, North Fort Myers 54: The Seahawks opened the season Monday night with a rousing victory over North Fort Myers.

Seven players dressed for the Seahawks and five of them scored in double figures, led by Nate Henry and David Flynn with 13 points apiece. J.J. Bailey added 12 points and seven rebounds in his first varsity action while Chase Galuzny added 11 points and Justin Mitchell 10.

“It would be a thrill if that is our calling card with that kind of balance for the season,” said Seahawks coach Mark Rinehart.

The Seahawks (1-0) visit Ida Baker Tuesday night.

Boys Soccer

Lakewood Ranch 3, Mariner 1: Mariner fell behind 3-0 before mounting a late-game surge in a loss to Lakewood Ranch Monday in the Sarasota Thanksgiving Tournament.

Juan Rincon scored the Tritons’ goal late off an assist from John Teeter, but that was all the scoring they could muster. Goalkeeper Matt Brust made eight saves.

The Tritons (3-2) face Sarasota Riverview in the second round of the tournament Tuesday.

Cape Coral 2, North Fort Myers 0: Caio Amaral scored both goals as the Seahawks blanked the Red Knights Monday night.

Amaral scored in the first half on a through pass from Ron Lind to break the scoreless tie. He tacked on the second one with a header off a corner kick by Kayck Friere.

Goalkeeper Daniel Villamil made 10 saves to record his first shutout.

North keeper Romberto Ordonez saves 13 shots.

The Seahawks (6-0) play at Lehigh while the Red Knights (3-1) host Port Charlotte both on Tuesday.

Cape Coral 5, Port Charlotte 2: Paulo Acosta scored two goals and assisted on another to help boost Cape Coral to victory Saturday over Port Charlotte.

Kevin Lopera added one goal with an assist, Kayck Friere and Ron Lind each added a goal and Oscar Camacho assisted on two goals for the Seahawks. Daniel Villamil made five saves in goal to seal the win.

Girls Basketball

Fort Myers 62, Ida Baker 32: Fort Myers started to pull away in the second quarter and coasted to victory over Baker Monday.

Ali Nicloy led the Bulldogs with eight points.
