By Staff | Nov 26, 2010

Tim Dal Bon and Terrel Griffin combined for 48 points to boost Island Coast to its first victory of the season, an 80-46 victory over Evangelical Christian in the Thanksgiving Tournament at LaBelle Wednesday.

Dal Bon hit for a career-high 28 points, which also is a new school record for a single game. Griffin contributed a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Greg Orellana also pulled down 10 rebounds.

“It is good to get that goose egg off us this early after they went 0-10 to start last season,” said new Gators coach Greg Coleman.

The Gators broke it open after a tight first quarter, pouring through 46 points in the second half to equal the Sentinels’ total point production.

The Gators (1-2) host Estero Monday, the first of three games next week.

Mariner 2, Osceola 1; (3rd place) Sarasota 1, Mariner 0: A deflection goal early in the second half lifted Sarasota to victory over Mariner Wednesday evening in the third-place game of the Sarasota Thanksgiving tournament.

The Tritons defeated Osceola earlier to advance to the third-place game. Josh Teeter and Juan Rincon scored the Tritons’ goals with assists by Isiah Romano and Rincon. Goalkeeper Matt Brust made five saves in that match.

Brust saved seven shots against Sarasota, but the one that sneaked into the net spelled defeat. A shot by the Sailors caromed off two Tritons defenders before finding the net.

“We outplayed them most of the game, and had three good opportunities to score, but just couldn’t find the goal,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. “It was just one of those games where we couldn’t find the goal.”

John Teeter and Tim Thomas were cited for their midfield and defensive play.

The Tritons (5-3) return to action for a district game at home Tuesday against Estero.
