Blades in battle for first place
Two weeks ago, the Florida Everblades hit the road with questions hanging over their heads about effort and consistency. They return seemingly with those questions answered, riding a six-game winning streak after winning all five road games.
When the Everblades left on that road trip the day after Thanksgiving, they had just turned in their most complete performance of the season by shutting out the Trenton Devils on home ice.
“That last home win really helped us on the road trip,” said Everblades coach Greg Poss. “We were able to put five games together on the road where we played a full 60 minutes and I think that game really helped in us being able to play the way we did on the road.”
With the six-game win streak, the Blades are now 15-9 and in second place in the South Division, three points behind division leading Greenville. The Road Warriors just happen to be the Blades’ next opponent for three key games starting Wednesday night at Germain Arena.
The matchup should be the toughest to date on home ice. The Blades are just 1-4 against the Road Warriors this season.
“Greenville has a real good team,” said Poss. “They are one of the better teams we have seen all year. I think they are better than any that we saw (on the road trip).”
With potential control of the division on the line this week, Poss is trying to downplay their importance and focus on the smaller picture of the team’s play, instead of potential importance in the standings.
“They are important games in the sense that we can see where we are relative to a good team in the league, and I think Greenville is the best team we have seen this year,” said Poss. “So, I think this will be a good measuring stick for where we are.”
Regardless of the outcome Wednesday night, the Blades have two more cracks at dethroning the Road Warriors on Friday and Saturday nights before a fourth-straight game in Greenville next week to start a three-game road trip.
