Prep Report: Orellana sparks Gators

By Staff | Dec 7, 2010

Island Coast overcame an early 9-0 deficit and made positive adjustments that led to a second half burst that beat LaBelle 73-61 in a key District 3A-12 matchup Monday night.

“We started out sluggish, but made mostly attitude adjustments at halftime,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “We played hard in the second half to get a huge district victory for us.”

Tim Dal Bon put up a game-high 23 points, but it was senior Greg Orellana and junior Terrell Griffin who were bullish on the boards to give the Gators a 52-29 rebounding advantage.

“Twenty of our rebounds were on the offensive end,” said Coleman. “Orellana was an animal on the glass and played the fourth quarter with four fouls.”

Orellana finished with a double-double of 14 points and 18 rebounds while Griffin chipped in with seven points and 12 rebounds.

Still trailing 32-29 at halftime, the Gators launched a 25-10 third-quarter surge that sucked the life out of the Cowboys.

The Cowboys had four players in double figures in scoring, led by Braxton Ford with 18 and Cordaryl Jones with 14.

The win is the fourth in their last five games for the Gators (4-3, 2-1 district), who host district rival Dunbar Thursday night.
