Woman wins 6th Gold medal
Over the last three days, Deb Harrison of The Villages has been a fixture at the Estero Community Center’s Florida Senior Games State Championships medal stand. She followed her three gold-medal-winning performance in pickleball over the weekend with another three gold-medal-winning performance Monday in table tennis.
For these State Championships, Harrison decided to give table tennis a try after winning 15 pickleball medals since 2005. She started the day with a women’s doubles gold followed by a mixed doubles gold. The women’s singles gold medal in the 60-64 age group proved to be the toughest. She needed five games in both the semifinals and championship matches.
Another athlete winning gold in a second sport Monday was Essie Faria of North Miami. Faria won in women’s singles and women’s doubles in the 75-79 age group. She also won a gold medal in the 10K Road Race Saturday.
John Shultz of Inverness stretched his consecutive medal-winning streak to 18 years, earning a gold medal in the 70-74 men’s doubles.
Another veteran Florida Senior Games table tennis champion, Dorothy Han, of Sun City Center, won her 15th women’s singles gold medal, dating back to 1994.
Cape Coral’s Werner Stollenmeier won his fourth consecutive men’s singles gold medal winning the 55-59 age group. Stollenmeier also won a men’s doubles gold medal partnered with Marvin Neff of Fort Myers.
Tuesday’s competition features the first of two days of cycling with the 5K and 10K road races in Cape Coral. Men’s golf tees off at Magnolia Landing in North Fort Myers and singles tennis begins at Three Oaks Community Park in Fort Myers.
