Prep Report: South nips Cape with three-pointer at buzzer

By Staff | Dec 8, 2010

Sophomore Jack Kelly connected from three-point range at the final buzzer to lift South Fort Myers to a 47-45 victory over Cape Coral Tuesday night at The Nest.

It was a game the Seahawks should have won, but didn’t deserve to win, according to Seahawks coach Mark Rinehart.

“We went up 11-2 and we scored 10 points in the final two minutes, but in between we were horrendous,” said Rinehart. “We were a mess offensively and turned the ball over like we didn’t care about the ball whatsoever.”

The Seahawks led 16-12 after the first quarter, but scored just 17 points over the next two periods combined. As Rinehart pointed out, 10 of their 12 points in the final quarter came in the final minutes.

Still, the Seahawks had chances to win the game. They trailed by four points with less than a minute to play, but Santo Figueroa made a steal and a basket to give them the lead.

With 14 seconds remaining, the Seahawks deflected a pass, but the Wolfpack won the scramble for ball possession and called time out. That set the stage for Kelly’s game-winning three at the buzzer.

“The beat us to a lot of loose balls all night,” said Rinehart. “Yea, we lost at the buzzer, but we didn’t deserve to win the way we played. Maybe this is good for us, make us better, and we will get better.”

Marquis Jones was the only Wolfpack player to score in double figures with 10 points.

David Flynn connected for 17 points and Justin Mitchell added 10 for the Seahawks (4-3, 1-2 district), who visit Estero on Friday.

Mariner 62, North Fort Myers 48: Mariner took advantage of a fast start and a gym full of students to pin a District 4A-11 defeat on North Fort Myers Tuesday afternoon.

The Tritons opened a 16-7 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 32-17 at halftime, then answered every surge the Red Knights could come up with in the second half.

“Playing during the day with 1,400 kids in the stands it’s hard for the guys to stay focused and execute early,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “Every time they would make a run in the second half, cut it to 10, we’d answer with a run of our own.”

Senior Sam Guerrier led the Tritons with a game-high 20 points, backed by junior Kendrec Ferrara with 11 points and 10 rebounds and senior Donald Minto with 12 points. Justin Emmons pulled down 16 rebounds.

Junior Steven Mercado led the Knights with 19 points and junior Jordan Vega added 17 points.
