Prep Report: Verot blanks Baker, 4-0

By Staff | Dec 9, 2010

Ida Baker coach Mark Fitzpatrick is counting the days until the Christmas break, hoping that several missing starters can get healthy for the second-half push in January.

The Bulldogs were shutout by Bishop Verot 4-0 Wednesday night at Viking Stadium. Goalkeeper Rush Manterola made 18 saves.

Chris Szabo and Andrew Palumbo scored two goals apiece for the Vikings (11-0), who face Sarasota Monday.

The Bulldogs (5-7) play at North Fort Myers Friday night.

Mariner 1, Port Charlotte 0: Lucas Orellana’s throw-in found Juan Rincon inside the penalty box for Mariner’s game-winning goal in the first half at Port Charlotte.

“We played much better tonight as a team even though we missed some clear opportunities by a few inches here and there,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas.

Matt Brust made six saves for the Tritons (8-4), who play at Riverdale Friday night.

Mariner 5, Port Charlotte 0: Kelsea Whitaker broke free for four goals to lead Mariner past Port Charlotte.

Ali Muro-Solis had the other goal and Megan Fritz contributed three assists for the Tritons, who got four saves by keeper Sam Greenwell and three saves by Jessica Parks.

The Tritons (8-3) host Riverdale Friday.

George Jenkins 6, Ida Baker 1: Trailing 4-0 at halftime, the Baker Bulldogs came out strong in the second half in a loss to unbeaten George Jenkins.

Ashleigh Weaver scored the Bulldogs’ goal from the top of the 18-yard box to cut it to 4-1. It is the first goal scored on Jenkins (12-0) since last year’s state semifinals.

Jenkins has been in the state Class 5A final four three straight years with one championship.

The Bulldogs (10-3-1) host North Fort Myers Friday night.
