Senior Games at halfway point

Wednesday marked the midway point of the Florida Senior Games State Championships and two Games veterans, Janet Brown of Lakeland and Corkey Nydle of The Villages, continued their dominance in their respective women’s golf age groups.

Brown won her eighth consecutive gold medal dating back to 2003. Shooting an 80, she won the gold in the 55-59 age group, tying Linda Frisch of The Villages for the low score of the day. Frisch won the gold medal in the 60-64 age group.

Nydle won her seventh consecutive gold medal dating back to 2004, shooting an 87 to win the 80-84 age group. She holds the age group records in 70-74, 75-79 and 80-84.

In men’s singles tennis, Larry Albritton of Lehigh Acres repeated as a gold medalist in the 60-64 age group. Also repeating as a gold medalist was Dan Holcomb of Tampa, who won the 75-79 age group.

In horseshoes, Virginia Cooper of Fort Meade won the gold medal in the 60-64 age group with 42 ringers in 74 throws.

Day six of the State Championships features action in basketball at Estero Community Park, the first day of men’s and women’s doubles tennis at Three Oaks Community Park, and the 20K and 40K cycling road races at Gator Circle in Cape Coral.
