Prep Report: Seahawks manhandle Green Wave, 4-0

By Staff | Dec 10, 2010

The Cape Coral Seahawks controlled both the tempo and ball possession Thursday night en route to handing the Fort Myers Green Wave a 4-0 defeat at Dave Warkentin Field.

Both teams were missing several starters for the second meeting between them this season. They tied the first time.

The win for the unbeaten Seahawks also is the 100th high school win for coach Aldo Nardiello. It’s his 51st win at Cape High with the other 49 coming at a New York high school. Nardiello also owns more than 170 wins at the NCAA level.

Nardiello was pleased with the Seahawks’ play throughout.

“That second goal was created by a great combination of passing,” he said. “It was the critical goal for us. Soccer is still a chess match. After that second goal it opened up a bit. The score is not indicative of how close the game was.”

The Seahawks got one goal and one assist from Paolo Acosta, one goal and one assist from Juan Cano, and single goals from Caio Amaral and Kevin Lopera.

The scoreless tie was broken with 12 minutes remaining in the first half when the Seahawks were awarded a penalty kick. Acosta cooly delivered the ball just inside the right post for what proved to be the game-winning score.

Six minutes later, Lopera took a pass from Cano at the top of the 18 box for the second goal. The dominance of the Seahawks is reflected in their 9-1 advantage in shots on goal for the first half.

It stood at 2-0 through the first seven minutes of the second half when Amaral added the third goal.

A high ball glanced off the head of a Green Wave defender as the keeper came out to field it. The ball went toward the middle where Amaral tapped it into the open net.

Cano scored with 24 minutes remaining in the game off an assist from Acosta.

Seahawks goalkeeper Daniel Villamil preserved the shutout with just five saves. The Green Wave took many more shots, but most were either 20 feet over the crossbar or 20 feet wide of the posts. Fort Myers keeper Michael Thompson made 13 of the 16 saves.

The Seahawks (10-0-2) play at District 4A-11 rival Estero Friday night.
