No injuries in early morning Lehigh house fire

By Staff | Dec 13, 2010

Nobody was injured in a early morning blaze today, Monday, in the 4700 block of 25th St. SW when Lehigh Acres firefighters were called out at 1:57 a.m. to a duplex fire that started inside the garage, according to Fire Marshal Ken Bennett.

He said the fire originated from a kerosene heater that had been accidentally turned over while in use, causing the kerosene to spill onto the garage floor. He said the kerosene then ignited. The fire appears to be unintentional at this time, Bennett said.

One person was at home in the unit of origin at the time of the fire and did escape without injury, Bennett said. A small family in the adjacent unit also was home at the time of the fire and also escaped without injury.

Fire damage was contained to the garage and utility room with moderate to heavy heat and smoke damage noted to the unit of origin. Damage is estimated at about $100,000 and includes contents.

Bennett said the Red Cross has provided assistance to both families.
