Prep Report: Wave stuff Tritons, 67-50

By Staff | Dec 15, 2010

Oh those turnovers, and oh those free throws.

The Mariner Tritons could have used less of one and more of the other against the defending Class 4A state champion Fort Myers Green Wave Tuesday night. The outcome might have been different.

The Tritons’ unbeaten streak came to an end with a 67-50 District 4A-11 loss to the Wave, who did not fare much better in the aforementioned statistical categories.

The Tritons (5-1, 4-1 district) committed 11 turnovers in the first half as the Wave built a 33-17 lead. They came out energized in the third quarter and cut the deficit to a mere five points, 41-36 with 1:10 left, but the Wave (6-1, 5-0) went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter to open the lead back to 47-36.

At this point, the Tritons had missed nine free throw chances (5-of-14) that would have kept them within striking distance.

“No doubt we’ve got to do a better job with free throws,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “As bad as we played in the first half we couldn’t get over the hump. When you are down so big it is hard to get over the hump. You expend so much energy getting back to the hump you can’t get over it.”

Sam Guerrier led the Tritons’ comeback in the third period, driving to the basket for 10 of his game-high 27 points. He kept it going in the fourth quarter, adding 11 more after being limited to six points in the first half.

“It was a coming-out moment for him,” said Harris. “He played well and I think he showed he is one of the best players in the area.”

The Wave had an answer, though. Senior Theo Speas, a transfer from Ohio in his first season with the Wave, connected for a season-high 22 points, including six three-pointers that were like daggers in the heart of several Mariner runs.

“He has been a spark for us this year,” said Wave coach Scott Guttery. “He comes with a lot of energy, but we didn’t expect him to hit that many threes.”

The Tritons spent most of the fourth quarter trying to get back within 10 points, but the Wave responded to every surge. John Therrian got behind the Tritons’ defense for four layups in the closing period to help maintain the advantage.

Evan Graham added 17 points for the Wave despite limited playing time due to foul trouble over the last 2 1/2 periods.

At the free throw line, the Tritons finished just 7-of-19 while the Wave were 6-of-14. The Tritons were guilty of 16 total turnovers while the Wave made 12.

The Wave are in action Saturday in the City of Palms Classic. The Tritons host Ida Baker Saturday.
