North stars top South 20-14
On a cold night at Fort Myers High’s Edison Stadium, the North All-Stars outlasted the South All-Stars 20-14 Wednesday in the 22nd annual John Carrigan Rotary South All-Star Classic.
Each squad had 32 players, and the coaches had five days to prepare them for the game.
“We had four days on the field, and one day we were inside because it was too cold,” said Mariner coach Chris Siner, “but I think they all did well.”
Nineteen of the 32 players on the North squad represented Cape Coral schools. Headlining the North team were Aaron Lynch of Island Coast and Prince Holloway of Cape Coral.
Cape quarterback Bryan Greenwell played half the game, sharing duties with Marcus Simmons. He was 12-of-21 for 114 yards with one interception.
North scored on its first possession, moving the ball 43 yards in 10 plays. Greenwell passed for 30 of those yards.
The second possession, North drove 51 yards to the South 16 before settling for a field goal. Again, Greenwell completed two passes – one middle screen to Holloway for 16 yards, and the other to North Fort Myers’ Zane Lapaugh for 30.
South’s first big play came after North’s field goal. On third down, quarterback Dallas Crawford connected with Curtavious Thornton for a 60-yard gain that put them in the red zone. On the next play, a bad snap from center caused a fumble and Cape’s Edsel Caprice recovered it.
Late in the second quarter, Caprice was instrumental in stopping a South drive. On fourth down at the North 37, he sacked Crawford in the backfield for a 13-yard loss.
Jimmy Stewart of Island Coast also recorded two sacks in a span of three plays. The defensive line of Stewart, Caprice, Lynch and Cape’s Chris Johnson was solid all night for North, which led 10-0 at halftime.
South capitalized on a 25-yard punt return by Sammy Watkins to the North 37. Five plays later Crawford hit Chris James for an 18-yard touchdown.
North’s Mark Deboy, who hit two field goals, missed from 37 yards, but North stopped South on downs and got the ball back at the South 39. Terrell Davis ran it in from nine yards out.
Deboy’s second field goal put North up 20-7.
South tried four passes in a row on what was its last possession. North defensive back Nelson Candelario of Island Coast separated the receiver from the ball on a good hit.
North’s Simmons threw a lame-duck pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Champ Lewis, who returned it 100 yards for a South TD. After a failed onside kick, South held and had three final desperation pass attempts. North held and secured the victory.
MVPs for the game were Chris James of Dunbar for the South and Terrell Davis of East Lee for the North.
The North has won four straight Classics, but the South leads the series overall 15-6-1.
