Prep Report: Port Charlotte at buzzer beats Cape

By Staff | Dec 18, 2010

A last-second heave from half court found the bottom of the net to give Port Charlotte a 58-55 overtime victory over Cape Coral Friday night.

The Seahawks had the ball under their own basket with seven seconds remaining. The designed in-bounds play led to a good shot, but it was off the mark and the Pirates retrieved the rebound and called timeout with two seconds remaining.

“We wanted to force them to go to the guards away from the basket,” said Seahawks coach Mark Rinehart. “We executed the plan perfectly. The kid took two dribbles and heaved it at the basket. It hit the front of the rim and bounced a couple of times before it went in.”

Tyler Hevia made the game-winner, giving him nine points for the night. The Pirates also got 13 points apiece by George Nackley and David Bernard.

“We got into deep foul trouble again like we did against Fort Myers,” said Rinehart. “(James) McIntyre, (Santo) Figueroa and (Justin) Mitchell all fouled out before the overtime. I am so proud of the kids because they scrapped and battled and hung around in the overtime.”

The Seahawks had a four-point lead with 30 seconds left in regulation when they were called for a foul, awarding the Pirates two free throws. A Seahawks turnover followed and the Pirates (6-3) forced the overtime by hitting a shot with three seconds left.

David Flynn led the Seahawks with 16 points, Mitchell finished with 14, Chase Galuzny added 10 and Figueroa, who had been sick all week, pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

The Seahawks (6-4) return to action Dec. 27 in the Gulfshore Shootout in Naples.
