Prep Report: Hoops victories conclude Mariner Winter Fest
Mariner’s all-day Winter Sports Fest came to an end Saturday night with the host Tritons’ 53-45 boys’ basketball victory over Ida Baker at Frank Morris Gymnasium.
The game followed a morning and afternoon full of boys’ and girls’ soccer action outside in periods of rain as well as wrestling inside. The Tritons’ girls’ basketball team defeated Evangelical Christian 49-37 prior to the boys’ game to make it an evening sweep.
The hosts placed first in wrestling and took second in boys’ soccer in addition to defeating Baker.
Kendric Ferrara led the Tritons with 12 points backed by Sam Guerrier with 11.
“We did a good job against their size and I feel like we outrebounded them,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “Our size and depth was key as far as enabling us to get after them in the second half.”
The Tritons (6-1) outscored the Bulldogs in three of the four quarters, including 31-22 in the second half to seal the victory.
Shaun Manego led the Bulldogs with 14 points, Christian Davis added 13 and Angel Inchausti 11.
The Tritons host their own Christmas Tournament next week, a three-day event that starts Monday.

Wrestling
The host Tritons came away from the five-team Best of the West Duals as the overall champion by going 4-0 against Cape Coral, Island Coast, North Fort Myers and Ida Baker.
Island Coast went 3-1 to place second while North was third at 2-2, Baker fourth at 1-3 and Cape on the bottom at 0-4.
“It is the first time we got to wrestle other Cape schools at one time and one place,” said Tritons coach Dave Phillips. “Baker and Cape are in our district, so we got a good look at them, probably the last time till the district. It was a good way to end the first half of our season.”
The Tritons had four wrestlers go undefeated on the day. Chip Curtis at 135 pounds, Nick Maynard at 160, James Maynard at 171 and Basil Minto at 189 gave perfect performances. In fact, Minto remains undefeated on the season at 19-0.
“There was good competition and it was a good day overall,” said Phillips. “It all went smooth and there were some close matches, like North beating Baker 42-40.”
Teams take the holidays off before returning to the mats the first week of January.
“Everyone is tired and beat up a little, so they need some time off,” said Phillips. “We’ll get reacy for the state series when we come back.”
Boys Soccer
Riverdale and Mariner both went 3-0 in the Winter Invitational, but Riverdale was crowned the team champion by two points over the Tritons. Riverdale won twice by shutout while the Tritons did not win by shutout in their three matches. One extra point was awarded for a shutout victory.
“It was a perfect day for soccer,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. “The rain actually helped prevent dehydration and cramping, unlike last year.”
The Tritons defeated both Hardee and Immokalee by a 2-1 margin and edged Charlotte 3-2. Juan Rincon scored four goals total, Tim Thomas had two and Lucas Orellana added one. Goalkeeper Matt Brust had a total of 12 saves while Cody Kibbler made six saves in two halves of play.
The Tritons (11-5) play in the three-day Southwest Florida Winter Invitational at Golden Gate starting Tuesday.
Girls Soccer
Ida Baker and Riverdale placed 1-2 in the girls’ Winter Invitational.
Baker went 3-0 on the day, defeating Immokalee 6-0, clipping Charlotte 1-0 and Hardee 8-0. Shannon Pearl got the game-winning goal against Charlotte.
“We were missing nine players, so those who were there stepped up and played very well,” said Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski. “It was a long day, but it was worth it because we have a very deep bench.”
Host Mariner won 8-0 over Hardee and Immokalee, but lost to Charlotte 3-0 in the third and final match of the day. Megan Fritz and Rebecca Smith scored five goals apiece. Goalkeeper Sam Greenwell barely handled the ball in the first two matches while Heather Gillions tended the net with three saves in the third game.
“It was a miserable day, everyone was soaking wet,” said Tritons coach Beth Gedde.
The Tritons (9-5) get roughly 10 days off before coming back in January to face Baker. The Bulldogs (14-4-1) play their final two district games that week against Mariner and Fort Myers.
Girls Basketball
Alyssa Dodson collected a game-high 15 points to lead three double-figure scorers in the Tritons’ 49-37 win. Monica and Mariella Bono added 10 points apiece.
“The key was the resilience of the girls,” said Tritons coach Jeremy Derringer. “We were down 20-8 when I called timeout, and I think the girls decided they were tired of coming out on the short end of the stick in games like this. It wasn’t any magic strategy adjustment by me, but more a matter of will by them.”
The Tritons (2-13) are back in action at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Blanche Ely Holiday Classic in Fort Lauderdale.
