Winter Fest likely back next season

By Staff | Dec 22, 2010

With all five of the winter sports teams involved on Saturday – and 17 teams total – Mariner High athletic director Vito Mennona judged the Winter Sports Fest a success, and making preliminary plans for next year.

“All of our teams do something over the holiday break, so I would rather they be here than somewhere else,” said Mennona. “And they get to have the home field and home court advantage, it’s easy for our parents and coaches. It was just good for everybody.”

The Tritons won the two basketball games and took first place in the five-team Best of the West wrestling meet by winning all four matches. Ida Baker won the girls’ soccer invitational while Riverdale edged Mariner by two points in boys’ soccer.

“The only glitch was the Immokalee girls’ soccer bus was late, so they only played one 40-minute half the first match,” Mennona said. “The rain was not a problem because all the soccer teams are used to playing in that and were prepared with their tents. The fields got a bit muddy, but it could have been worse. It didn’t pour down all day. There was no lightning, so there were no delays. It didn’t slow us down.”

Mennona said he got good feedback from parents and coaches, especially the soccer teams.

“They were thankful and appreciative and said they’d like to come back next year,” he said. “The wrestling matches we’ve done year in and year out, we just put it on the same day as the others. It’s the first year we did all the sports together, but with basketball next year I’d like to get the same school playing both boys and girls. We had a good turnout because Baker and ECS are both local.”

The Tritons’ boys capped off the day-long festival with a 53-45 boys’ basketball victory over Ida Baker.

Kendrec Ferrara led the Tritons (6-1) with 12 points backed by Sam Guerrier with 11.

Shaun Manego led the Bulldogs with 14 points, Christian Davis added 13 and Angel Inchausti 11.

The Tritons (11-5) play in the three-day Southwest Florida Winter Invitational at Golden Gate starting Tuesday.
