FGCU tumbles 76-63
Alex Young scored 23 points and Leroy Nobles added 17 to lead IUPUI to a 76-63 win over Florida Gulf Coast Monday night at Alico Arena.
The Jaguars (7-8) scored the game’s first eight points and led by as many as 10, 30-20, in the opening half after a three-pointer by Nobles with 4:27 remaining.
A three-pointer by Christophe Varidel with six seconds to go pulled the Eagles (3-8) within five, 36-31, at halftime.
The Eagles trailed 44-41 with 16:03 left, but the Jaguars went on a 20-9 run over the next 6:12 to push the bulge to 64-50.
IUPUI led by as many as 18 and no fewer than 12 the rest of the way.
For the fifth time in the last seven games, sophomore Anthony Banks led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points and added six rebounds. Senior Reed Baker added 14 and junior Marlon Rivera contributed 11 points to go with six rebounds and a game-high eight assists. The Eagles have lost seven of their last eight.
The Eagles hit just 4-of-17 shots from three-point range after connecting for 10 and 11 threes in their previous two games.
“Give credit to IUPUI and a great performance by Young on both ends of the court,” said Eagles coach Dave Balza. “We didn’t make enough shots and that just fueled their defensive intensity.”
Stephen Thomas and John Ashworth scored 13 apiece and Christian Siakam grabbed 11 rebounds for the Jaguars, who shot an impressive 54 percent (28-52) from the floor, including a 58 percent (15-26) clip in the final half.
The teams last met in 2007 with IUPUI also winning that one 84-62.
The Eagles’ next game is an Atlantic Sun Conference clash with Belmont on Jan. 3 at Alico Arena.
