Couple is found that returned lost dog
Doug and Donna Mayfield are the “Christmas angels” that a couple was looking for two weeks ago when their little dog, a Pomeranian had gotten out of the house and could not be found by its owners, Bea and Hal Colby who live on Huntdale St.
The Mayfields searched in vain for the owner of the dog after they picked it up just a few feet on the pavement from Lee Blvd., across from Lehigh Regional Medical Center. Unable to find the owners by knocking on several doors in the nearby neighborhood, they took Missy home for the night and began their quest again the next day to locate the owners.
The little Pomeranian was a favorite of Bea Colby and not being able to find her left her upset and sad, she told The Citizen when a story about the dog being found ran in the Dec. 15 edition of The Lehigh Acres Citizen and also on Lehighacrescitizen.com.
The Mayfields who found the dog eventually knocked on a door behind the Colby home and the owner, Brenda Jones of Glendale Ave., said she recognized the dog and that it belong to her neighbor behind her.
The Mayfields knocked on the Colbys’ door and when they opened it, there was their little dog and they were so excited to get the dog back that they forgot, they said, to get the names of the couple who found the dog and thought perhaps they had not properly thanked them.
“Well they saw the story after a friend mentioned it had been in The Citizen,” Hal Colby said.
“They are very nice people and I think we will be friends.”
When the Mayfields approached Missy, they used a name that sounded like Missy and the dog allowed them to pick her up. The dog could have run across the six-lane highway and very likely been killed.
“It could have been a tragedy for the dog if she had tried to cross busy Lee Blvd.,” Hal Colby said. “It’s just a miracle that she didn’t run from them.”
Bea Colby couldn’t be happier now that Missy is back at home with her and her husband and their two other dogs.
“It’s the best Christmas present we could have gotten,” Hal Colby said. “And we are so glad that we met them again and got their name and thanked them properly.”
