Ida Baker erupted for 26 points in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit and launch a 61-48 come-from-behind victory over South Fort Myers Monday in the opening game of the Holiday Madness boys’ basketball tournament at East Lee County High School.

Baker (5-5) faces Cypress Lake in the semifinal round at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Panthers defeated Clewiston in Monday’s first round.

The Bulldogs sputtered in the first half and trailed 24-18 at intermission. They outscored the Wolfpack 43-24 in the second half to build their 13-point margin of victory.

“We did a much better job of attacking their zone and hitting our shots in the second half,” said Bulldogs coach Brad Seiss. “We missed a lot of layups and open shots in the first half, but we did a good job of breaking their press in the third quarter.”

The Bulldogs connected for three of their four three-point baskets in the third quarter, converted 7-of-8 free throws and created several offensive rebounds.

Senior Christian Davis scored 10 of his 14 points in the third quarter run while sophomore Angel Inchausti hit for nine of his game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs. Senior Mike Richardson contributed a double-double of 10 points and 17 rebounds, including eight on the offensive board. Senior Shaun Manego pitched in with eight points and five assists.

Gulfshore Shootout: Ensworth (Tenn.) scored the game’s first 15 points en route to an overwhelming 74-19 victory over Cape Coral Monday night in the Gulfshore Shootout at Golden Gate.

Ensworth, which won the tournament title in 2008, rode the back of 6-foot-8 forward Conner McDermott to a 28-6 lead after one quarter and 48-15 at halftime. McDermott had 10 points at intermission and finished with a game-high 15.

The Seahawks (6-5) were guilty of 32 turnovers and were held to four points in the second half with a running clock. They were scoreless in the fourth quarter.

“They are definitely a good team, give them all the credit,” said Seahawks coach Mark Rinehart, “but I was real disappointed in the way we played tonight.”

Senior Justin Mitchell led the Seahawks in scoring with a mere eight points.

The Tigers, a state finalist in Tennessee last season, are making their third trip to the Gulfshore Shootout, where they now are 8-1 in the tournament overall. They face Riviera Suncoast in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

The Seahawks play a consolation bracket game at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday against Lely, which lost to Palm Beach Gardens 64-43.

Great Florida Shootout: Bishop Verot lost to Orlando Dr. Phillips 56-42 Monday in the first round of the 30th Great Florida Shootout in Kissimmee.

Nate Howard and Ricky Doyle led the Vikings with 16 and 12 points respectively.

Shane Larkin led Dr. Phillips with 30 points.

The Vikings tip off at 1 p.m. Tuesday against Osceola.

Girls Soccer

Orange Classic: The U17 Strikers competitive soccer team made a successful debut Monday in the first round of the annual Orange Classic Tournament in Weston. Playing two divisions higher than last season as U16s, the Strikers blanked Georgia FC Elite 3-0.

Payton Van Horn of Baker High School scored two of the goals while Amanda Ivankovic of Charlotte High connected for the third goal. Goalkeeper Amanda Kopale of Cape High made seven saves, including two key saves late in the game to preserve the shutout.

Some 30 games had to be rescheduled on the first day of the four-day tournament because the wintery weather in the northeast has delayed the arrival of several teams. Further rescheduling is expected, especially if travel is canceled for some teams.

Rescheduling does not affect the Strikers, who are back in action at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Showcase II bracket against Super Nova FC of Pennsylvania. Their third game is Wednesday against ASG Gold West of Texas and wraps up Thursday against TSC Elite of Georgia.
