Unbeaten FGCU nabs 10th win

By Staff | Jan 4, 2011

Five players scored in double figures, led by junior Nicoya Jackson’s game-high 17 points, as the unbeaten FGCU women’s basketball team drained 13 three-pointers en route to a 79-39 win over A-Sun foe Belmont Monday night at Alico Arena.

The win boosts the Eagles’ record to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the A-Sun, extending their best Division I start in program history. Belmont falls to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in conference.

The win also extends FGCU’s home winning streak to 29 straight games, the third longest in the nation behind UConn and Stanford.

The Eagles knocked down 13-of-36 (36.1 percent) from three-point range to top their nation-leading 11.1 three-point field goals per game average.

The Eagles’ defense was solid throughout as they forced 22 turnovers and held the Bruins to just 39 points, the third time they have held an opponent below 40 points since moving to Division I in 2007-08.

Shannon Murphy contributed 12 points, a game-high six assists and four steals in just 26 minutes.

The Eagles return to the court Wednesday when they host Lipscomb.
