Mariner’s last shot at victory was blocked in the closing seconds Saturday night as Community School of Naples upended the Tritons 71-70 at the Lely Shootout.

“It was a fun high school basketball game,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “They killed us on the offensive boards in the first half, but we did a better job on the boards in the second half.”

The Tritons outscored the Seahawks 27-23 in the fast-paced first quarter, but trailed 46-41 at halftime.

“They come at you with five (players) in and five out every few minutes and makes it difficult to make the adjustment,” said Harris.

After three quarters, the teams were tied 62-62.

The Tritons trailed 71-70 with six seconds left and possession of the basketball on their own baseline.

“We executed the in-bounds play, but didn’t get the shot we wanted,” said Harris. “The shot was blocked and there was a scramble for the loose ball, but time ran out.”

The Tritons had four players score in double figures, led by Sam Guerrier with a game-high 20 points. Justin Emmons and Nick Marrero added 14 points apiece while Derick Adams contributed 11 points. Emmons and Guerrier had nine rebounds apiece.

Kent Coyne led the Seahawks (11-2) with 16 points and Danny Straub finished with 12 points.

The Tritons (10-5) host Cape Coral (8-7) Tuesday at Frank Morris Gymnasium.
