Prep Report: Island Coast girls stunned, 36-34
A tight game throughout not surprisingly was decided in the final seconds.
Makandra Brown hit a 12-foot shot with three seconds remaining Monday night to lift LaBelle to a 36-34 victory over Island Coast.
Andrea Lutkenhaus led LaBelle with 17 points with Brown adding 10.
Junior Loresha Blackman topped the Gators with a double-double effort of 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Gators turned the ball over two consecutive possessions in the last 30 seconds, opening the door for LaBelle’s game-winning shot.
The Gators (10-9) host Cypress Lake Wednesday night.

Boys Basketball
Ida Baker 74, LaBelle 68: After missing the front end of three one-and-one free throw situations down the stretch of the fourth quarter, Ida Baker converted 10-of-12 at the line in overtime to down LaBelle.
Billy Rees and Patrique Chery sank 4-of-4 free throws apiece in the overtime to seal the Gators’ victory. Rees finished with a team-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds. Tim Dal Bon added 14 points, Chery finished with 12 points and six assists, Greg Orellana had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Harding added 10 points and six assists.
Braxton Ford hit a game-high 23 points for the Cowboys, but it was his free throw miss with 10 seconds remaining that forced the overtime.
The Gators (9-8, 5-3 district) play at Cypress Lake Wednesday night.

Boys Soccer
Ida Baker 3, SWF Christian 0: Baker assistant principal Doug Palow has agreed to finish out the season coaching the Bulldogs after Mark Fitzpatrick stepped down before Friday’s game against Fort Myers. Palow coached boys’ soccer at North Fort Myers before moving into his administrative post at Baker for the 2009-10 school year.
The Bulldogs, who had won only two of their previous seven games, responded with a victory over SWF Christian.
Nick Presti scored two goals and Jordan Pinto added the third goal. Daniel Sharkey and Presti recorded assists while goalkeeper Rush Manterola made seven saves.
The Bulldogs (8-9-1) host Lemon Bay Tuesday night.
Girls Soccer
Mariner 4, Palmetto Ridge 1: Mariner closed out the regular season with a victory at Palmetto Ridge.
Rebecca Smith led the Tritons (11-6-1) with two goals and one assist. Nicole Romano and Alyssa Barletta added one goal apiece. Brittany Webb-Martin recorded two assists and Kelsea Whitaker assisted on one goal.
The Tritons’ next action is the District 4A-11 Tournament that starts Saturday at Ida Baker.
Bishop Verot at Ida Baker: Due to a scheduling conflict, Monday’s game is rescheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.
