Blades lose sixth in a row

By Staff | Jan 14, 2011

In the 900th game in franchise history, the Florida Everblades’ offensive struggles continued Thursday night in a 4-1 loss to the Greenville Road Warriors.

The loss extends their current losing streak for the Everblades (21-18-2) to six in a row.

Both teams were tying to snap out of bad funks. The Everblades got a good start scoring the first goal early in the first period to grab a 1-0 lead. Ross Carlson scored the Everblades’ league-leading ninth short-handed goal of the season at 3:41, but that would be all for the night.

The play developed with a nice play defensively by David Fischer, who kicked the puck ahead to Carlson in the neutral zone where he started in on a 2-on-1 rush with Francis Lemieux. From the right circle, Carlson’s pass to Lemieux ricocheted off a defender and past Road Warriors goaltender Nic Riopel for his fourth goal of the season.

Greenville (24-10-2) answered with a controversial goal at 14:01 on a play that defenseman T.J. Reynolds threw a shot on net from the bottom of the right circle that was stopped by Everblades net-minder Jaroslav Janus. The rebound popped up in the air and appeared to be swatted into the net by Chris McKelvie with his glove. The goal was allowed to stand and evened the score at 1-1.

The Road Warriors then grabbed the lead for good with a power-play goal at 15:08 of the frame. After a shot from the left circle was stopped by Janus, the rebound kicked into the right circle where Blake Parlett fired a quick shot into the upper left corner of the net.

Neither team got on the scoreboard in the second period.

The Road Warriors added to their lead late in the third period on Brandon Wong’s ninth goal of the season and fifth against the Everblades. Greenville scored again at 16:55 when Shane Harper’s shot from the top of the right circle squeezed past Janus to give the Road Warriors a 4-1 lead.

Greenville improves to 7-3-0 against the Blades this season.

In their 900 games, the Everblades boast a record of 526-283-91 for a .635 winning percentage.

The Everblades are in action Friday at the South Carolina Stingrays.
