Baker trips Cape, 77-61

By Staff | Jan 15, 2011

Ida Baker had struggled in recent games to come up with a good team effort, but it all came together Friday night at Cape Coral.

The Bulldogs broke open a tight game with a fourth-quarter spurt and accurate free throw shooting down the stretch to upend the Seahawks 77-61.

“We beat their press and got some transition baskets to start the fourth quarter,” said Bulldogs coach Brad Seiss. “They beat us the first time (54-51) we played, but this was perhaps our best team performance of the season, shooting, rebounding and defense.”

Shaun Manego led the Bulldogs with a game-high 24 points and added eight assists. He got double-figure support from Angel Inchausti with 15 points, Christian Davis with 14 and a double-double of 12 points and team-high 14 rebounds from Mike Richardson. Phil Deems chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Justin Mitchell led the Seahawks with 16 points with James McIntyre adding 13 points.

The Bulldogs (9-7) host North Fort Myers next Friday. The Seahawks (10-9) host Mariner next Thursday.

South Fort Myers 56, Mariner 48 (OT): The Mariner Tritons fought back from yet another poor second-quarter performance that dug them into a 15-point hole only to lose in overtime at South Fort Myers.

“We were pretty flat in the first half,” said Tritons coach James Harris.

The Tritons outscored the Wolfpack 28-13 in the second half to force overtime. They tied it up with 12 seconds left in regulation and got the ball back with four seconds remaining when South was guilty of a charging foul. The in-bounds play went to Sam Guerrier for the last shot, but his 25-footer was off the mark.

South jumped on top quickly with a three-point basket to start the overtime and the Tritons never caught up again.

Guerrier led the Tritons with 19 points and six rebounds while Justin Emmons grabbed eight rebounds to go with just six points.

The Tritons were 2-of-26 from three-point range on the night.

“That’s too many and a recipe for defeat,” said Harris.

Steven Crawford led the Wolfpack with 14 points and Dakota Phillips added 11.

The Tritons play at Dunbar Saturday night.

Ida Baker 2, Gulf Coast 1: An early goal by Gulf Coast was all the Sharks would get in the regular-season finale and defeat at Ida Baker.

“Gulf Coast is a good team and we wanted to play well against them,” said Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski. “I think we are peaking at the right time because we have been trying different things all season.”

The Sharks’ 1-0 lead only lasted about 10 minutes before Payton Van Horn scored with an assist from Mary Farella to tie the game in the first half.

The game-winning goal came with about 20 minutes left in the game on a penalty kick by Kelly Fuhrman, one of two senior players honored on senior night.

The Bulldogs’ other senior, goalkeeper Carole Farella, had six saves.

The Bulldogs finish 19-5-1 overall and host the District 4A-11 Tourn-ament that begins Saturday with two play-in games among the bottom four seeded teams. Cape Coral kicks off the first game at 1 p.m. against Lemon Bay.

The defending district champion Bulldogs are seeded third and play sixth-seeded Mariner in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Monday.

“I think the district is anyone’s this year,” said Trepkowski. “North Fort Myers is up there, Riverdale and even Mariner can win it. We hope to come back Monday and continue to play well.”
