By Staff | Jan 15, 2011

N. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Florida Everblades snapped their six-game losing streak with a solid 5-1 win over the South Carolina Stingrays Friday night.

The Everblades (22-18-2) rode a four-goal second period and 31 saves by goaltender Bobby Goepfert to their first win of the new year.

It was their 901st game as a franchise and boast an overall record of 527-283-91.

Just as they did in the previous two games of this road trip, the Everblades scored first. The return of forward Matt Beca to the line-up paid off. Midway through the first period defenseman David Fischer worked the puck down low where Mike McKenzie forced it loose to Beca below the goal line. Beca jammed the puck to inside the left post past Stingrays netminder Todd Ford.

South Carolina (21-15-2) answered late in the frame on Pierre-Luc O’Brien’s shot from the high slot deflected off traffic in front Blades goalie Bobby Goepfert and into the net.

The Everblades erupted in the second period for four goals, two on the power play, to open a 5-1 lead before the second intermission.

The goal-scoring blitz began at 3:16 on Florida’s first power play marker. Mike Egener began the play at the right point where his initial shot was blocked, but got the puck back to feed a pass to Francis Lemieux at the bottom of the right circle. Lemieux threw the puck to the front of the net where he deflected off Mathieu Roy’s skate and into the net for his eighth goal.

One minute later the Blades opened a 3-1 lead on a deflection at the front of the net by Drew Larman. The goal, Larman’s first of the year, began with Tony Mosey working the puck out to the left point for Egener, who threw a shot on net that Larman got a piece of.

They extended the lead to 4-1 on a second power-play goal by Egener.

The last goal came from rookie Tony Mosey tallying his first professional goal at the 15:23 mark.

The Everblades are on the ice Saturday at the Gwinnett Gladiators.
