Mariner rallies in second half to beat Dunbar, 61-49
After not being able to make the plays necessary down the stretch the night before, the Mariner Tritons were up to the challenge Saturday night with a 61-49 come-from-behind victory at Dunbar.
For a change, the Tritons had a decent second quarter even though they were outscored 21-18 to trail Dunbar 28-26 at halftime.
“We had a big third quarter, hit a couple of three-balls,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “You get to a point where you start doubting yourself, but we were able to fight through and stretch out our lead by doing a good job of attacking the basket. That opened up our outside shots.”
The fourth quarter was even better, taking a 42-36 lead into the final eight minutes and extending it to the final margin of victory.
“Sam (Guerrier) led us with eight of our 19 points in the quarter,” said Harris. “Tonight we made the plays we needed, made good basketball plays.”
Guerrier finished with a game-high 18 points to lead the Tritons and fellow senior Derick Adams adding 11 points.
Johnell Barnes and James Strawbridge led the tigers with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tritons (12-6) are back in action Thursday night at Cape Coral for a rematch of the Tritons’ 55-54 victory last week when Kendrec Ferrara blocked Justin Mitchell’s shot at the buzzer.
