By Staff | Jan 16, 2011

The Cape Coral Seahawks polished off its unbeaten district season Friday night with a 5-0 victory over Ida Baker at Dave Warkentin Field.

Juniors Caio Amaral and Kevin Hurley scored goals in the first half for the Seahawks. Amaral added a second goal in the second half. Hurley’s goal was the defensive specialist’s first varsity score on a night honoring the team’s five seniors.

Juniors Nathan Stone and Ryan Herold each had one goal in the second half to round out the scoring. Like Hurley, Herold’s goal was his first as a varsity player.

Ron Lind, Jordan Taylor, Juan Cano, Olivier Benedict and Paolo Acosta were credited with one assist apiece. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Villamil preserved the shutout with eight saves.

The Seahawks (17-0-3) finished District 4A-11 regular-season play with a 6-0-3 record. Their final game before the district tournament is next Friday at Evangelical Christian.

The Bulldogs (9-10-1) visit Fort Myers next Friday in their season-ender.

Mariner 0, South Fort Myers 0: Mariner’s scoring problems continued in a scoreless tie at District 4A-11 rival South Fort Myers.

“We’ve played well against the top three teams in the district,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. “We tied with two of them and lost one.”

Goalkeeper Matt Brust made eight saves throughout to preserve the deadlock.

“Overall I think we had the better opportunities to score tonight than they did,” said Cardenas. “We just couldn’t get the ball to go in the net, even unlucky at times.”

Cardenas credited Isaiah Romano with a good defensive job marking South’s top player, limiting him to one shot on goal.

The Tritons (13-8-3, 3-4-2 district) have one game left next Friday when they host North Fort Myers, which accepted a late invitation to fill in for a cancellation.
